Personality

Zongcilang is lazy, mischievous, and sharp-tongued in ordinary life. He enjoys provoking Bai Ina over his age and appearance, dismisses chores with absurd excuses, and treats most situations with casual irreverence. 14 15 21

His indolence conceals an obsessive, bloodthirsty streak. When challenged by Bai Ina, he becomes visibly fanatical; after Kubo Yamato's death, grief, guilt, and hatred turn him ruthless toward both enemies and subordinates. 13 27

Despite his cruelty, Zongcilang is fiercely loyal to his teacher and companions. He repeatedly risks his life for Bai Yi, ultimately choosing capture by Lixier Riwiz so Bai Yi can escape. 23 200

Background / History

Dao Academy

Zongcilang was one of Kubo Yamato's direct disciples at the Dao Academy, alongside Hijikata Yoshitoyo. Although he rarely trained, Hijikata recognized him as the academy's true sword prodigy. 12

When Bai Ina arrived at the academy seeking help for Loxi, Zongcilang immediately sensed his strength and challenged him. Bai Ina defeated him in a brief exchange, striking his throat with a scabbard before he could continue the duel. 12 13

Kubo Yamato's Capture and Death

After CP9 abducted Kubo, Zongcilang and Hijikata bound Bai Ina and Loxi to prevent them from joining the rescue attempt, then pursued their teacher themselves. 23

During the confrontation, Zongcilang attacked Lucci with a sword wreathed in azure flames but was decisively defeated and severely injured. Kubo's subsequent death became the defining catalyst for Zongcilang's later actions. 24 25

Revolutionary Army

Zongcilang joined the Revolutionary Army to continue Kubo's mission. Following the Terminal Gray fire, he and Hijikata gathered nearly five hundred survivors; those who refused to submit were killed. 25 27

He led one faction toward Mt. Colubo, using brutal training and the extermination or recruitment of bandits to create a fighting force. Bai Ina identified his wider strategy as an attempt to bring Mt. Colubo's nearly ten thousand bandits under their command. 27

Later Campaigns and Revenge

Years later, Zongcilang joined Hijikata, Mo Mo, and Loxi in searching for Bai Ina. He fought alongside the Asura Pirates and demonstrated sufficient swordsmanship to completely suppress Kingdew, captain of Whitebeard's Eleventh Division. 172 180

Still driven by hatred for Cipher Pol, he returned to Enies Lobby to confront Carlo, declaring that he intended to settle the score from eight years earlier. He later tormented a CP agent identified as Carter while Bai Yi confronted other enemies. 198 199

At Spandine's residence, Zongcilang and Bai Yi encountered Lixier Riwiz. When Bai Yi was critically wounded, Zongcilang took up his broken comrade's sword and attacked Riwiz to secure Bai Yi's escape. Riwiz broke Zongcilang's sword, captured him, and arranged his public execution at the Reverie. 200 201

Bai Yi infiltrated the execution platform and freed Zongcilang before the sentence could be carried out. 202
