Background / History
Sa Kaiyang served in the Marines, initially holding the rank of Colonel. While intercepting Bai Yina’s Revolutionary Army vessel in the Calm Belt, he challenged Bai Yina to a duel and was decisively defeated by Great Shock—Ghost Sword Underworld Guidance. He nevertheless negotiated for his soldiers’ safety, offering to guide Bai Yina’s fleet through the Calm Belt and act as his sparring partner. 36 37
During the voyage, Sa Kaiyang repeatedly dueled Bai Yina. He became increasingly frustrated by Bai Yina’s rapid growth, but the battles also advanced his own Armament Haki. On the supply island, he used an iron hook and rope to pull the badly injured Bai Yina away from a giant beast—saving him, but wounding him further with the hook. 38 41
He later assisted the Revolutionary Army as an irregular commander, leading fifty thousand troops and relentlessly harassing the Goa Kingdom’s army to draw it into an ambush. 58 59
Sa Kaiyang was eventually captured by Gild Tesoro and publicly sentenced to execution. Bai Ina chose to intervene despite the political danger, declaring that Sa Kaiyang was his companion. 96
Following the Gran Tesoro incident, Sa Kaiyang and ten others formed the Asura Pirates. He and Lamperouge Kingsley became the crew’s two vice-captains; Sa Kaiyang was later identified as a former Marine Headquarters Commodore with a 250 million Beli bounty. 123 171
Appearance
Sa Kaiyang is a burly, imposing swordsman who carries two blades on his back. 42 171
- Usually fights with a sword in each hand.
- His wanted poster depicts him carrying his paired swords. 171
- He has been described as rough-looking and physically powerful. 171
Personality
Sa Kaiyang is a battle-hungry, reckless combatant who actively sought Bai Yina as a sparring partner even after losing their first duel. He is proud of his strength and quick to taunt opponents, but his willingness to bargain for his subordinates’ safety shows that he values the lives of the soldiers under his command. 37 38
He is also notably shameless, loudmouthed, and provocative. His harassment tactics helped force a vastly larger enemy army into pursuit, while his habit of speaking without thinking repeatedly creates trouble for his allies. 58 59 187
Despite his crude behavior, Sa Kaiyang is cunning when dealing with other pirates. He exploited an alliance around Ogar Island by withholding that White Asura was his captain, causing several allied pirates to panic once they realized where they had sailed. 171
