Ch. 341Building the Castle Keep
Key plot points and events
- After taking power, Xuanye makes Konoha the Land of Fire’s capital and orders a vast Castle Keep built in the village center. Konoha’s residents support the project, seeing it as a fitting symbol of the village’s new importance.
- News spreads that Uchiha Genya has abolished both the Daimyo and Hokage positions and proclaimed himself Thunderfire Great General. Other countries view this as an open challenge to the political order.
- The Wind Daimyo demands that Rasa surrender Sunagakure’s authority and ninja roster. Rasa rejects the demand as dangerously foolish, believing Genya’s bold move signals confidence in Konoha’s strength.
- Other Daimyos consider using the former Fire Daimyo’s Clothing-Belt Edicts to pressure Konoha, but their plan is undermined by the old Daimyo’s abdication and disappearance. The edicts are now largely worthless.
- The Daimyos unite in condemning Genya and order the village leaders to wage war against the Land of Fire and capture him. None of the major village leaders is willing to obey: they fear Konoha’s power or are too politically vulnerable.
- With the great villages unwilling to act, the smaller villages pose little threat in Xuanye’s view; Konoha’s own ninja can handle any unrest.
Character developments and interactions
- Xuanye consolidates his new regime by making Konoha the capital and raising an imposing Castle Keep as its center of authority.
- Uchiha Genya shifts from covert maneuvering to openly abolishing the old offices and claiming supreme power, alarming the Daimyos.
- Rasa recognizes the danger of the Wind Daimyo’s demand and refuses to risk Sunagakure by challenging Konoha.
- The Daimyos move from opportunistic attempts to exploit the crisis to a united, fearful response once they realize Genya threatens the system that gives them power.
- Ōnoki, A, and Mei Terumi each avoid acting against Konoha. Mei is especially precarious as she works to unify Kirigakure after its defeat and her recent appointment as Fifth Mizukage.
Significant themes
- Power and political legitimacy: Genya’s actions challenge the established division of authority between Daimyos and ninja villages.
- Self-interest over kinship: The Daimyos’ supposed family ties do not outweigh their desire to seize the Fire Country’s wealth and influence.
- The limits of leverage: The Clothing-Belt Edicts lose their force with the regime that issued them, showing that political tools can quickly expire.
- Fear and shifting loyalties: The Daimyos realize that the ninja who once protected them could become their enemies, while village leaders calculate survival over obedience.
- Ambition and symbolism: Konoha’s Castle Keep embodies the village’s rise and Xuanye’s determination to make it the center of the new order.
