Background / History
Fifty thousand years before the main events, Rin was a girl who accepted imprisonment by the Flame-Chasing Moths for her sister's sake. Soldiers shot her inside the prison. Her death and the emergence of her Herrscher Core preceded her transformation into Corruption and her attack on the previous civilization. Dr. Mei subsequently sealed her; Rin remained in the Black Box for more than fifty thousand years 22.
After escaping the seal, Rin encountered Yae Sakura, who reminded her of her sister. The two shared a body, and Rin's possession of Sakura brought her into conflict with Fang Jie, Murata Himeko, and Sato Yuno. Fang Jie addressed the attacking shrine maiden as “Rin,” briefly stopping her assault, then teleported her away. Once Sakura regained control, Rin emerged separately as a black fox and pursued Fang Jie for Honkai energy, partly to sustain the injured Sakura 17 18 19.
In the snowy world where Fang Jie took them, Rin reconsidered her past and rejected the hatred that had governed her. She repaired Sakura's body, separated their shared core into a Herrscher Core and Stigmata, and gave Sakura the latter to sustain her. Rin then forged the remaining core and the Black Box into Jizo Mitama and its scabbard 22. She initially wanted only freedom, but agreed to guide Fang Jie and carry the sleeping Sakura toward Belobog 23 25.
Appearance
Rin first acts through Yae Sakura's body, then appears as a black fox formed from mist. After gaining a body of her own, she takes the form of a small, fox-eared girl 18 19 23.

Personality
Rin is proud and guarded, often answering concern with mockery or anger. Her fear of losing people close to her is especially evident in her protectiveness toward Yae Sakura, though she resists admitting it. After rejecting her old resentment, she no longer seeks a life of fighting and killing; reports of violence across the galaxy visibly distress her 22 23 25 50.

Rin's authority can erode and use biological matter, machinery, psionic abilities, and information. She uses virus-like media to infiltrate networks and corrupt targets 20 23 25.
