Background

Fifty thousand years before the present, Rin was a girl who was declared a Herrscher. She accepted imprisonment for her sister's sake, but soldiers executed her inside a sealed prison. Her death, anger, and Herrscher Core gave rise to the Herrscher of Corruption; in that form, she devastated the previous civilization before Dr. Mei sealed her in the Black Box. 22

Rin remained trapped in hatred for humanity for over fifty thousand years. After accidentally escaping the seal, she encountered Yae Sakura, whose resentment toward humanity resonated with her own. Rin merged with Sakura, aided her revenge against Yae Village, and remained entangled with her for the following five centuries. 22 50

During the Chiyu Academy incident, Rin controlled Yae Sakura as Higokumaru and fought Murata Himeko and Fang Jie. Fang Jie recognized her as “Rin,” provoking a violent reaction; he ultimately separated and contained her through Honkai Killer, leaving her weakened into a black-fox form. 18 19

Appearance

Rin's appearance changes substantially with her state and degree of freedom.

Personality

Rin is initially proud, impulsive, hostile toward humanity, and intensely defensive of her name and past. She reacts violently when Fang Jie calls her “Rin,” regarding it as a reminder of her imprisonment and suffering. 18

After breaking free of her lingering hatred, Rin begins to question her former identity and purpose. The destruction and suffering she learns about across the galaxy leave her distressed rather than satisfied, and she explicitly rejects a life defined by endless killing. 22 23

Despite her cold manner, Rin is protective of Yae Sakura. She shields Sakura from Fang Jie's reckless attacks, carries her across the snowfields, restores her body, and worries over her awakening. 22 25 46 Her softer side is often expressed childishly: she throws tantrums, becomes jealous, and bites Fang Jie when angered. 24 46

Chiyu Academy Incident

Rin appears as Higokumaru while possessing Yae Sakura. She attacks Fang Jie, Himeko, and Sato Yuno, but Fang Jie uses her true name to disrupt her before teleporting her away from the battlefield. 17 18

After Fang Jie subdues her possession, Rin emerges as a weakened black fox. She attempts to obtain his Honkai energy, but cannot overcome his resistance to erosion. 19

Liberation and Separation from Yae Sakura

Rin rejects Fang Jie's initial proposal to save the world and begins walking the Path of Destruction after seeing Nanook. 20

Her ensuing transformation allows her to shed her old hatred, separate from Yae Sakura, heal Sakura's body, and forge Jizo Mitama. She identifies herself not only with her past as Corruption, but as Rin herself. 22

Journey to Belobog

Rin agrees to guide Fang Jie and carries the unconscious Yae Sakura across the snowfields. She remains apprehensive about the galaxy and its inhabitants, but cooperates with Fang Jie despite their constant bickering. 25 26

In Belobog, Fang Jie establishes boundaries for her: she must not massacre the population or destroy the planet. Rin challenges his authority but ultimately allows him to prove his resolve. 28

Underworld and Astral Express

Rin accompanies Fang Jie through Belobog's Underworld, remaining distant from locals while showing concern for Yae Sakura's condition. 37 38

After Sakura awakens, Rin's humanlike form and continued protectiveness become clear. She later travels with Sakura to the Astral Express as a guest while Fang Jie returns to Jarilo-VI. 46 49 50
