Background / History
Jiraiya spent years traveling outside Konoha while secretly investigating Akatsuki. He supplied Konoha with its earliest intelligence on the group, identifying it as a powerful mercenary force with larger ambitions. Hiruzen Sarutobi initially hesitated to recall him because this investigation was ongoing. 37
After Konoha’s Anbu suffered heavy losses while pursuing the surviving Uchiha, the village recalled Jiraiya as one of its few remaining fighters capable of confronting a Mangekyō Sharingan user. 37 39
Personality
Jiraiya is relaxed, boastful, and deeply proud of his work as an author. He insists that literature is about entertaining readers rather than winning or losing, despite taking obvious satisfaction in his book outselling Arashi’s Bleach. 47
Behind his carefree manner, he is observant and cautious. He notices signs of ninja training in Arashi’s bookstore, recognizes that the Land of Grass trail was deliberately staged, and treats the prospect of facing two Mangekyō users as potentially lethal. 40 47
He prefers negotiation before violence. When confronting Arashi, Jiraiya offers him an opportunity to surrender and live in Konoha; only after Arashi refuses does he commit to capturing him by force. 48
Abilities & Skills
Ninjutsu
Jiraiya employs a varied combat style built around restraining techniques, elemental ninjutsu, and rapid tactical adaptation.
- Wild Lion’s Mane Technique — Extends and hardens his hair into powerful binding tendrils capable of crushing rock. 48 49
- Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld — Converts solid ground into a restrictive swamp to trap or limit an opponent’s movement. 48
- Fire Release: Great Flame Bomb — A composite technique combining oil and Fire Release for greater heat, duration, and range than ordinary Fire Release. 49
- Quickly adjusts his approach after recognizing that Arashi’s space-time technique makes a straightforward victory unlikely. 49
Toad Summoning
Jiraiya summons powerful allies from the toad clan to strengthen his battlefield control.
- Gamabunta — A gigantic toad swordsman summoned to pressure Arashi directly and contend with his stone constructs. 49 50
- Fukasaku and Shima — Two Great Sages summoned to protect Jiraiya while he gathers natural energy. 49 50
- Coordinates with his summons rather than fighting independently, assigning Gamabunta to delay Arashi while the sages cover his Sage Mode preparation. 49 50
Sage Mode Preparation
Jiraiya attempts to enter Sage Mode after determining that his normal state, even with Gamabunta’s support, may not be enough to defeat a Mangekyō user. 49
- Requires time to gather natural energy. 49 50
- Relies on Fukasaku and Shima to improve the gathering process and defend him during the vulnerable preparation period. 49 50
- His transformation remains incomplete by the end of Chapter 50, as Arashi continually disrupts him. 50
Tracking and Investigation
Jiraiya is an experienced investigator capable of detecting inconsistencies in physical evidence.
- Recognized that the Uchiha campsite in the Land of Grass had been deliberately arranged to lure Konoha into a pursuit. 47
- Previously gathered and transmitted intelligence on Akatsuki’s growth and ambitions to Konoha. 37
Equipment / Items
- Basic ninja-training scroll — A personal collection of introductory training methods that Jiraiya gives to Arashi before departing on his mission. He stresses that it can help someone begin training but cannot create a powerful ninja on its own. 47
Relationships
- Uchiha Arashi — Initially meets Arashi as a fellow author and bookstore owner; their friendly banter develops despite Jiraiya’s assignment to track the Uchiha survivors. He gives Arashi a training scroll, then later attempts to capture him in the Land of Grass. 39 40 47 48
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Konoha’s Third Hokage recalls Jiraiya to handle the Uchiha-survivor crisis after the Anbu hunt fails. 37 46
- Gamabunta — Summoned battle partner who fights Arashi’s earth manipulation and stone giant while Jiraiya prepares Sage Mode. 49 50
- Fukasaku and Shima — Great Sage allies summoned to help Jiraiya gather natural energy and defend him from Arashi’s attacks. 49 50
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to Konoha and the Bookstore
While Konoha searches for the Uchiha survivors, Jiraiya enters Arashi’s newly opened bookstore while looking for Icha Icha Paradise. Arashi instead gives him a copy of Bleach, and the two connect through their shared interest in writing. 39
Jiraiya recognizes that Arashi is not an ordinary civilian, noting both his status as a Reviewer and traces of ninja training in his home. He remains friendly but does not entirely dismiss his suspicions. 40
Land of Grass Operation
Before leaving Konoha, Jiraiya gives Arashi a scroll of basic ninja-training techniques as a parting gift. He then follows intelligence toward the Land of Grass, where he identifies the supposedly Uchiha-made campsite as a trap. 47
Arashi reveals himself as the Masked Man and admits to arranging the trail. Jiraiya attempts to persuade him to surrender, but their disagreement over the Uchiha massacre leads to open combat. 48
Battle with Uchiha Arashi
Jiraiya uses Wild Lion’s Mane, Swamp of the Underworld, and Gamabunta against Arashi, but Arashi’s space-time abilities and earth manipulation repeatedly prevent him from securing an advantage. 48 49
Recognizing the danger posed by Arashi’s Mangekyō, Jiraiya summons Fukasaku and Shima to prepare Sage Mode. Arashi counters by creating a stone giant to occupy Gamabunta and launching a Sage Art attack at Jiraiya and the two sages. 49 50
