Background
Shion is the daughter of the previous Shrine Maiden, Miroku, who died sealing Moryo. The loss left Shion grieving, fearful of Moryo, and resentful of both her inherited role and the circumstances that took her mother from her. She initially refuses to visit Moryo’s shrine despite being needed to retrieve Miroku’s relic. 17
Uchiha Chen persuades her to go by framing Miroku’s sacrifice as a mother’s attempt to protect her daughter rather than a duty owed solely to the world. Shion accepts the possibility of seeing her mother again and travels with him to the shrine. 17 18
Personality
Shion begins as sullen, grieving, and stubbornly opposed to confronting the shrine where her mother died. Her resolve changes once she believes Miroku may have left something behind for her. 17 18
She is trusting and emotionally direct toward Chen after he protects her during Yomi’s attack. Despite knowing little of his identity at first, she entrusts him with the Land of Demons’ guarded secrets and declares her affection for him. 20 22
Shion also proves decisive in governance. She accepts responsibility for organizing Chen’s proposed shinobi force, including adopting and training orphans, considering loyalty seals, selecting Ice Release recipients, and taking Haku under her care. 23 33 39 42
Abilities & Skills
Shrine Maiden Power
Shion possesses the power of a Shrine Maiden, a force specifically effective against Moryo.
- Her power is stated to surpass Miroku’s, though she is too young to control it safely. 21
- Miroku’s bell seals and restrains Shion’s developing power. 21
- Her power is not presented as useful against ordinary ninja opponents; during Yomi’s attack, she is physically vulnerable and must rely on Chen’s protection. 19
Shrine Maiden Authority
The Shrine Maiden holds supreme authority within the Land of Demons, exceeding that of the Daimyo.
- Shion states that the Daimyo is effectively a figurehead and that the country’s guards and soldiers are loyal to the Shrine Maiden. 21
- Shrine guards bear loyalty marks that compel protection of the Shrine Maiden and prevent them from revealing her secrets. 21 22
- She offers Chen both the role of her guard and the position of lord of the Land of Demons. 21
Administration of the Shinobi Force
Shion becomes Chen’s principal collaborator in building an independent force in the Land of Demons.
- She adopts orphans in the Shrine Maiden’s name and begins training them as ninja. 23 33
- She coordinates the selection of children to receive Ice Release through Chen’s scroll. 39
- She manages funding, personnel, and preparations for the proposed shinobi village while Chen remains in Konoha. 22 39 40
Equipment / Items
- Miroku’s bell — A relic recovered from Moryo’s shrine that restrains Shion’s Shrine Maiden power. 21
- Special Flying Thunder God kunai — Left with Shion by Chen so they can communicate and coordinate across distances. 23
Relationships
- Uchiha Chen — Her protector, trusted confidant, and partner in developing the Land of Demons’ shinobi force. Shion confesses her feelings, learns his identity, and asserts a relationship with him. 20 22 23
- Miroku — Her deceased mother and the former Shrine Maiden. Shion retrieves Miroku’s bell and speaks with a remnant of her consciousness at the shrine. 17 21
- Moryo — The entity sealed by Miroku and a source of Shion’s grief and fear. Shion’s inherited power is specifically tied to restraining him. 17 21
- Kurai Seiichi — The Daimyo of the Land of Demons. Shion’s authority as Shrine Maiden is stated to supersede his. 21
- Yuki Haku — Entrusted to Shion’s care by Chen after being brought from the Land of Water; she sympathizes with Haku’s loss and assumes responsibility for him. 42
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shrine Maiden Protection Commission
Shion is the central subject of the Land of Demons commission accepted by Chen. The mission requires her survival and the protection of the bell connected to her power. 15
Initially refusing to leave her residence, Shion agrees to travel to Moryo’s shrine after Chen appeals to her memories of Miroku and the possibility of recovering her mother’s relic. 17 18
Yomi’s Ambush and the Shrine
Yomi and his followers ambush Shion and Chen en route to the shrine. Shion is unable to defend herself against the attackers and witnesses Chen protect her from Yomi’s Fire Breath attack. 18 20
After surviving a collapse with Chen, she treats his injury and continues to the shrine. There, she retrieves Miroku’s bell and reunites briefly with her mother’s remaining consciousness. 20 21
Formation of the Land of Demons Power Base
Shion reveals the Shrine Maiden’s political authority and offers to support Chen’s ambitions. After he reveals that he is Uchiha Chen of Konoha, she agrees to serve as the nominal controller of a future shinobi village in the Land of Demons. 21 22
She and Chen begin the project cautiously by adopting potential ninja candidates and allowing outside ninja to take Land of Demons missions as a cover for the growing force. 23
Leadership in Chen’s Absence
While Chen operates from Konoha, Shion continues organizing the Land of Demons’ personnel and asks him whether loyalty seals should be used on the children under training. 33
She later receives responsibility for choosing three children to gain Ice Release and takes Haku into her care as a potential instructor and survivor of the Yuki Clan. 39 42
