Background / History

Sasuke first approaches Training Ground No. 7 after hearing that his older brother, Itachi, praised Uchiha Chen's strength. Wanting to prove himself, he sets traps for Chen, but they are conspicuous and ineffective. Chen kicks him into one of his own traps, prompting Sasuke to identify himself as Itachi's younger brother and insist that he will someday become as strong as Itachi. 27

His attempts to ambush Chen continue unsuccessfully. Chen restrains and gags him to a tree, and Shisui later identifies him as Itachi's younger brother. Sasuke is humiliated further when he wets himself while tied up, then flees after Chen mocks him. 28

Chen subsequently begins training Sasuke, ostensibly to help him earn Itachi's admiration. The program starts with endurance running, then shifts to having Sasuke defend against Chen's taijutsu. Sasuke endures the harsh routine despite being repeatedly defeated and injured, eventually completing the three-kilometre running assignment and learning the Clone Technique. 31 32

While Chen is away from Konoha, his Shadow Clone continues the training with enough severity that Sasuke becomes afraid of Chen. Nevertheless, Sasuke remains determined to defeat him and resumes their rivalry after Chen returns. 42 43

After Chen knocks him unconscious, Sasuke is dressed in women's clothing and makeup with Izumi's assistance. Chen publicly exposes his identity while Sasuke is wearing the outfit, causing widespread gossip in Konoha and damaging Sasuke's reputation. Sasuke later asks Chen to explain the incident to Fugaku, but Chen's deliberately rehearsed statement instead convinces Fugaku that Sasuke forced him to say it. 43 46

Sasuke eventually challenges Chen again using the Great Fireball Technique and wire-guided kunai. Chen deliberately avoids ending the fight immediately, then uses Earth Release: Double Suicide Decapitation Technique to bury Sasuke in the ground. Sasuke remains trapped for nearly a day before Chen remembers to dig him out. 49 50

Personality

Sasuke is intensely devoted to Itachi and measures his own worth against his brother's talent. His desire to gain Itachi's praise is the main reason he accepts Chen's punishing training regimen. 27 31

He is proud, impulsive, and easily provoked. Each newly learned technique gives him renewed confidence that he can defeat Chen, even when previous challenges have ended in decisive losses. 32 43 49

Despite his emotional vulnerability and frequent tears after humiliation, Sasuke shows persistence. He continues training, completes difficult running assignments, and repeatedly returns to challenge Chen rather than abandoning his goal. 27 32 49
