Background / History

Suspicion of Uchiha Chen

Shisui first observes Chen's challenge against Itachi and is immediately struck by the child's use of Uchiha Shurikenjutsu, a skill he believes an ordinary child should not know. This begins his suspicion that Chen may be an infiltrator or spy. 1

He investigates Chen's past, learning that Chen was orphaned during the Nine-Tails Rebellion, lived in the Uchiha orphanage, and was later cared for by Izumi. Shisui initially finds Chen's unusually mature behavior suspicious, but considers a conspicuous child an unlikely spy. 3

When Chen challenges him, Shisui helps adjust traps that Chen had actually prepared for him. He allows a Shadow Clone to be caught in Chen's wire trap in order to test whether Chen will kill a defeated opponent. Chen loosens the wire instead, easing Shisui's suspicions. 3 4

Mentor to Chen

After confirming Chen possesses wind, fire, and lightning chakra natures, Shisui abandons his hostility and warns him to conceal all but his fire affinity to avoid jealousy. Shisui discovers that Chen had secretly left Konoha by noticing changes in his killing intent and aura; he correctly deduces that a Shadow Clone had remained in the village in Chen's place. 23

Chen subsequently reveals his knowledge of Danzo's actions, Kagami Uchiha's suspicious death, and the worsening divide between Konoha and the Uchiha Clan. The revelations force Shisui to reconsider his loyalty to the village and the possibility that the clan may need to leave Konoha to survive. 24 25
