Background & History
Nalan Yanran is Nalan Jie's granddaughter, Nalan Su's daughter, Yun Yun's disciple, and the Young Sect Master of the Yun Lan Sect. Her status and talent brought additional prestige to the Nalan Family within the Jia Ma Empire. 89
Initially proud and convinced of her own superiority, she traveled to the Xiao Family to end her engagement with Xiao Yan, offering compensation and cultivation resources. Xiao Yan rejected the proposal, revealed his advancement to Dou Zhe, and issued a three-year challenge before giving her a divorce letter and expelling her from the Xiao Family. 32
Her grandfather's Iron Brand Poison forced her to confront the consequences of that visit. Although Yao Wan had previously opposed the annulment, Nalan Yanran set aside her pride and sought the Medicine Fairy's help for Nalan Jie. Yao Wan subsequently treated her meridians, increased her Dou Qi circulation speed, and transformed her Azure Cloud Sword Art into a new Earth Tier Low-grade cultivation method that Nalan named the Azure Cloud Wind Riding Art. 90 96
Yao Wan continued to sharpen Nalan Yanran through repeated sparring, cultivation guidance, and revised techniques. Nalan Yanran later used a Disguise Pill to become “Qing Ran” and accompanied Xiao Yan into a secret realm without disclosing her identity. Their time together gradually replaced their former hostility with understanding and cooperation. 178 182 193
Nalan Yanran apologized to Xiao Zhan for her past conduct before facing Xiao Yan at Yun Lan Mountain. Their Three Year Agreement became a life-or-death duel in which she displayed wind-based swordsmanship, Sword Intent, and her improved techniques. She ultimately lost after Xiao Yan unleashed the Buddha's Rage Fire Lotus, though Yao Wan intervened to save them both. 201 211 215 216
Afterward, she became a central organizer of Pan Men, establishing its rotation rules and cultivation systems while also handling its daily administration. She later protected Xiao Zhan during the Imperial Capital crisis, fighting despite being injured and having already reached the Dou Huang realm. 257 318
Seeking the lost inheritance of Yun Lan Sect founder Yun Potian, Nalan Yanran traveled to Wujian Mountain with Xiao Yan. She controlled the ancestral formation, helped destroy a Spirit Devouring Clan remnant soul, inherited Yun Potian's Azure Cloud Sword legacy, and eventually entered years of seclusion to master the Sword Intent of her ancestors. Before leaving, she placed a Sword Intent restriction around Wujian Mountain and vowed to return one day to revitalize the Yun Lan Sect. 360 362 586
Appearance
Nalan Yanran is commonly seen in moon-white Yun Lan Sect robes and carries herself with the composed bearing expected of the sect's Young Sect Master. Her appearance and presence become notably sharper when her Sword Intent is released. 176 210 586
- Often wears a moon-white long dress or moon-white sect robes. 178 210
- Usually keeps her dark hair in a high ponytail; she unties it before using her strongest sword techniques. 178 214
- Has pale-green eyes. 586
- Carries a long sword, later described as a three-foot green sword. 212 371
- Her fully released Sword Intent can make even a glance feel as sharp as a drawn blade. 586
Personality
Nalan Yanran began as confident, status-conscious, and openly dismissive of those she considered beneath her. Her confrontation with Xiao Yan and her grandfather's illness forced her to recognize the limits of that outlook; she gradually became more considerate, humble, and willing to ask others for help. 32 90 197
She is exceptionally disciplined and competitive. Even after becoming one of the strongest sword cultivators of her generation, she continues to pursue stronger Sword Intent, new sword techniques, and dangerous cultivation opportunities. Her determination often manifests as stubbornness, particularly when she refuses to abandon a goal despite personal risk. 601 693 696
Despite her reserved public image, Nalan Yanran is protective of those close to her and capable of patience as a teacher. She guided Qing Lin's early cultivation and carried Pan Men's responsibilities while Xiao Yan was absent. 189 257
Abilities & Skills
Sword Intent
Nalan Yanran's defining strength is her Sword Intent, a will-based power distinct from ordinary Dou Qi. Her sword path grows stronger through resolve, allowing her to maintain pressure even as her Dou Qi is exhausted. 212 214 320
- Azure Cloud Sword Intent — inherited through Yun Lan Sect's lineage and later refined through Yun Potian's legacy. 361 601
- Devouring Sword Intent — obtained by absorbing a Sword Beast at Wujian Mountain. 368
- Nether Spring Sword Intent — merges the cold energy of the Nine Nether Yellow Springs with her Sword Intent; its cold sharpness can sever Dou Qi barriers. 733
- Formation control — used her Sword Intent to seize control of Yun Potian's natural formation and suppress a Spirit Devouring Clan remnant soul. 360
- Limit — her willpower can sustain Sword Intent beyond her depleted Dou Qi, but her physical body can still be harmed by excessive cultivation strain. 320 696
Azure Cloud Sword Arts
Her original Profound Tier High-grade Azure Cloud Sword Art was restructured by Yao Wan into an Earth Tier Low-grade wind-attribute art, later supplemented by Yun Potian's rankless Azure Cloud Sword inheritance. 96 113 361
- Greatly improved her Dou Qi circulation and restored rapid cultivation progress. 96 113
- Uses wind-attribute Dou Qi to enhance acceleration, aerial movement, and sword pressure. 211 213
- The inherited Azure Cloud Sword does not follow conventional grade divisions; its power depends on the wielder's Sword Intent realm. 361
Movement and Sword Techniques
- Improved Flying Catkins Movement Technique — an upgraded movement art that forms and shatters temporary Dou Qi wings for extreme bursts of speed. 189 191 213
- Shadow Chasing Sword — an Earth-grade sword technique revised by Yao Wan so it can be driven by Sword Intent rather than an overwhelming expenditure of Dou Qi. 191 214
- Absolute Sword — her ultimate move during the Three Year Agreement. 215
- Wind Spirit Fractal Sword — produces multiple sword qi attacks, later enhanced through her Sword Intent. 212
Body Refinement
Yao Wan taught Nalan Yanran the Glazed Body Sculpting Art so that her physical strength could better support her demanding sword cultivation. 382
