Background / History

The Tang Sect traces its inheritance to Tang San and publicly prides itself on a legacy of up to twenty thousand years. Its historic reputation rests on mechanical hidden weapons, including the Godly Zhuge Crossbow, Peacock Plume, Rainstorm Pear Blossom Needles, and Buddha Fury Tang Lotus, as well as secret cultivation arts 23 143 174 210.

During the war following the collision of Sun Moon Continent and Douluo Continent, Soul Tools surpassed Tang Sect hidden weapons in attack range and overall battlefield power. Nations sharply reduced their hidden-weapon purchases after the war, causing the sect’s commercial foundation to collapse within roughly two centuries 101.

The sect’s decline was also attributed to internal failings. Its masters were selected exclusively from Blue Silver Grass martial-soul users, despite Blue Silver Grass being regarded as a low-quality martial soul. Critics argue that the sect confused Tang San’s Blue Silver Emperor and Clear Sky Hammer inheritances with ordinary Blue Silver Grass, then spent generations cultivating unsuitable successors 59 60.

Its surviving inheritance proved incomplete. The Medicine and Poison Chapters of the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record had been withheld at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, guarded for those deemed worthy rather than passed directly to the sect. Tang Ya’s discovery of the Poison Classic shattered her belief that the Tang Sect possessed Tang San’s complete legacy 63 101.

At one point, Tang Ya was the sect’s sole survivor after its foundation was taken, with Bei Bei later joining her. She attempted to recruit Huo Yuhao to restore the sect, but he refused and challenged her understanding of its history and inheritance 100 101.

Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well

The Tang Sect guarded the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well for ten thousand years under an agreement with its plant-type Beast Kings. The agreement permitted only one entrant every hundred years, with a limit of two types of medicinal herbs per person 45 232.

The well contained the missing Medicine and Poison Chapters of the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, rather than being fully under the sect’s control. Tang Ya concluded that the Tang Sect lacked the strength to safely possess such a treasure 63.

In the later era, the Tang Sect could no longer grant access to the well because it had disappeared. This refusal contributed to Yue Hanmu and his allies choosing the Spirit Pagoda over the Tang Sect 252 261 270.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Decline and Tang Ya’s disillusionment

The sect’s premature destruction leaves Tang Ya determined to rebuild it. Mu Hongchen forces her to confront the Blue Silver Grass succession rule and the possibility that the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record is incomplete 58 59 60.

At the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, Tang Ya finds the Poison Classic and learns that Tang San deliberately withheld the medicine and poison inheritances from the Tang Sect. She relinquishes her ambition to restore the sect and hands its legacies to Mu Hongchen in exchange for revenge against her parents’ killers 63.

Huo Yuhao’s refusal

After soul transmigrating, Huo Yuhao meets Tang Ya and Bei Bei but refuses to join the Tang Sect. He disputes the explanation that Soul Tools alone caused its collapse, pointing to the sect’s surviving cultivation arts and incomplete inheritance 100 101.

Tang Chuan’s commercial successor sect

Tang Chuan establishes a new sectarian power with the Strength, Defense, and Breaking Clans, using Soul Tools rather than traditional hidden weapons as its commercial foundation. The Sleeve Cannon demonstration convinces Niu Gao that Soul Tools can be used effectively even by a three-ring Soul Elder 204 208 210.

The resulting Sunset Merchant Association manufactures Soul Tools through the Strength Clan, supplies the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect with defensive equipment, and develops Sunset Forest alongside the three recruited clans 212.

Federation-era conflict

In the later Federation era, the Tang Sect retains the Hero Hall as an entrance assessment site and offers select recruits direct access to its inner sect and Douluo Hall resources. However, its inability to open the vanished Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well weakens its recruitment efforts 252.

Yue Hanmu later publicly accuses the Tang Sect’s harvesting of the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well of contributing to Douluo Planet’s loss of fortune and environmental decline. Zhao Song of the Tang Sect’s Strength Hall challenges these accusations, while the sect’s political standing comes under pressure 269 270.
