Background / History

Su Mo is a transmigrator who awakened in Douluo Continent with the Broken Sword martial soul and only level-two Innate Soul Power. When all soul beasts except transformed humanoid soul beasts abruptly perished, the resulting crisis awakened his Self-Created Soul Skill System and threatened to end his cultivation path before it began 1.

On the night of the extinction, Su Mo notices that the atmospheric Soul Power has become much denser and that his cultivation speed has increased severalfold. He suspects that the dead soul beasts’ power has returned to the world and reaches level ten that night, immediately encountering the need for a soul ring 2 3.

Su Mo initially relies on his Self-Created Soul Skill System’s observation function to study soul rings. Realizing observation alone would take years to yield a ring, he identifies Xiao Wu as a transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast and coerces her cooperation by threatening to expose her identity, extracting her knowledge of self-condensing soul rings 3 5.

Xiao Wu’s innate method cannot be directly used by humans, but her explanation gives Su Mo the principles needed to devise his own approach. He develops the Ring Condensation Technique at eight years old, an achievement later revealed to the Original-Work World through the Sky Screen 4 204 207.

After successfully condensing his first ring, Su Mo keeps the achievement secret, fearing that exposure would bring danger and unwanted scrutiny from Martial Soul Hall 17. He leaves Nuoding City with Xiao Wu to observe stronger soul masters and develop self-created skills through combat experience 19 22.

While traveling, Su Mo learns to convert his Broken Sword martial soul into energy and fuse it with a refined iron longsword. This creates Soul Weapon Fusion, allowing the weapon to carry his skills while the martial soul absorbs weapon essence and evolves 22 23. His martial soul eventually develops into the dark-red longsword Blood Shadow 42.

At the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, Su Mo absorbs the Infernal Delicate Apricot and Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass together, enduring their opposing forces until they balance within him. The process strengthens his body, improves his martial soul to top-tier quality, and grants immunity to ice, fire, and poison. He also consumes the Full Moon Wearing Autumn Dew to enhance his spiritual power, gives Xiao Wu the Lovesick Heartbreak Red, preserves the Snowy Swan Kiss, and sacrifices the remaining immortal herbs to establish his Soul Power Pool 35 36 213 214.

Over the following decade, Su Mo cultivates to level 78 while independently condensing increasingly powerful soul rings. After learning that another person has created a soul ring through an artificially awakened soul beast, he chooses to publicize his own technique and claim the role of the soul master world’s savior 42 44.

The Sky Screen later reveals that Su Mo created more than a thousand soul skills during this decade. His preparation includes ultra-long-distance Teleportation and an automatically activated form of Void, which place him in a secure position before he exposes his discoveries to the wider world 214 215 216.

Su Mo publicly reveals the Su Mo Ring Condensation Technique at Martial Soul City, demonstrating that soul masters can condense rings through meridian circulation and visualization rather than hunting soul beasts 57 58. He later establishes Su Mo Academy to teach self-created soul skills to exceptional students 85 95.

During the disclosure, Su Mo refuses Bibi Dong’s invitation to become a Martial Soul Hall Honorary Elder, stating that he prefers freedom. Their political conflict intensifies as Bibi Dong investigates Xiao Wu’s identity and later spreads suspicions about her. Su Mo retaliates by disseminating information about the former and current popes’ past 61 77 78 79 82.

After reaching level 80, Su Mo condenses a red hundred-thousand-year eighth soul ring with the Soul Power Pool obtained from sacrificing immortal herbs. He subsequently upgrades his first ring from yellow to black through the Ring Ascension Technique, making his visible ring configuration seven black rings and one red ring 95 97.

Su Mo and Xiao Wu later enter Slaughter City, complete the Hell Road, obtain Divine Slaughter’s Domain, and use the Snowy Swan Kiss to accelerate Slaughter City’s destruction. He then continues evolving Blood Shadow by fusing it with a superior sword forged by Lou Gao 115 116.

Following Su Mo Academy’s success in the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, his teaching system becomes influential throughout the continent. Major factions begin selecting talented disciples for later academy recruitment despite the academy’s secrecy restrictions 123 124 137 143.

At Bo Saixi’s request, Su Mo travels to Sea God Island to formulate a cultivation system for sea soul masters. After recording and analyzing the Sacred Pillar Guardians’ and Bo Saixi’s skills, he produces the Sea God Formula and thirteen accompanying self-created soul-skill sets, earning Bo Saixi’s respect and an invitation to participate in Sea God Island’s trials 150 151 153.

Su Mo later asks Bo Saixi to assist in cleansing the Blood Red Nine-Headed Bat King from Tang Chen using Sea God’s Light. After Tang Chen regains his sanity and returns to Sea God Island, he offers Su Mo the Asura God inheritance that he can no longer complete himself 152 157 158.

After publicly disseminating broader self-created cultivation methods, attribute-specific techniques, and weapon skills through Su Mo Academy, Su Mo senses Faith Power and develops the God-Sealing Art to absorb it. The resulting cultivation surge carries him to rank 99 at age twenty-six 172 173 174.

Having reached the limit of mortal cultivation, Su Mo focuses on his soul-ring foundation. He uses the Ring Ascension Technique to raise all nine of his rings to hundred-thousand-year quality, then publicly releases the technique to the continent 175.

When the public recognizes that stronger self-condensed rings still lack innate soul skills, Su Mo Academy announces his research into Soul Skill Imprinting. Two months later, he completes and publicly releases the Soul Skill Inscription Method, allowing mastered self-created skills to be placed onto soul rings 176.

Over the next five years, Foundation Establishment, Ring Condensation, Ring Ascension, and Soul Skill Inscription spread across the continent. An upgraded Mysterious Heaven Skill allows even ordinary people without Innate Soul Power to cultivate. Su Mo travels with Xiao Wu and occasionally visits his academy while the gratitude and reverence of millions supply the Faith Power needed for his approaching ascension 176.

By his later visit to Sea God Island, Su Mo and Xiao Wu are both acknowledged as deities by Bo Saixi. In the subsequent era, they cease appearing regularly in public, but their academy and teachings remain central to the continent’s order 179 180.

The Sky Screen subsequently broadcasts Su Mo’s life to the Original-Work World, where soul beasts have not gone extinct. Searches by major factions establish that no counterpart of Su Mo exists there, but his cultivation methods cross the boundary between worlds through broadcasts and quiz rewards 190 192 204 205 240.

His early agreement with Xiao Wu is transactional, and he explicitly recognizes her usefulness to his goals 3 5 23 35.

He is also cautious about revealing his abilities until he can protect himself. Once he reaches Soul Saint level, however, he deliberately seeks public recognition by revealing his technique and naming it after himself 17 44 58.

Su Mo’s treatment of Xiao Wu is both intimate and coercive. He initially maintains leverage over her through knowledge of her identity, exploits her assistance for cultivation, and later sexually assaults her after sealing her martial soul, despite their later public presentation as romantic partners and combat companions 3 33 42 55 56.

Su Mo is calm under public pressure, including during his Soul Arena exhibition and his presentation at Martial Soul City. He is also politically conscious, using public demonstrations and the naming of his techniques to establish himself as the architect of a new cultivation era 50 57 58.

Su Mo is ruthless toward those he considers threats or irredeemably evil. He kills hostile bandits without hesitation, imprisons Tang Hao to analyze his techniques, and regards Slaughter City’s destruction as a necessary removal of a refuge for Fallen Ones 38 76 77 115.

As an instructor, Su Mo is confident that self-created soul skills can be taught systematically. He emphasizes teaching according to aptitude, designs skills around each student’s martial soul and combat style, and uses secrecy contracts to protect the academy’s methods 85 107 118 120.

Su Mo strongly values independence and refuses an Honorary Elder position in Martial Soul Hall rather than accept its restraints. His later public release of increasingly comprehensive techniques extends cultivation beyond elite clans and even beyond those born with Innate Soul Power 61 175 176.

Observers in the Original-Work World interpret his willingness to share knowledge as confidence that others cannot threaten him merely by copying his methods.
