Background / History
Taking Tianshuo as a Disciple
Dugu Bo encounters Yu Tianshuo in Sunset Forest and accepts him as his second disciple. Recognizing that the boy is concealing his surname, he applies soul pressure to test him. He accepts Tianshuo’s explanation that he wishes to avoid implicating his new master in his grudge against the Yu family, then brings him home with Dugu Yuan 2 3.
At Dugu Manor, he initially dismisses Tianshuo’s request to be whipped for cultivation. Once he witnesses the boy gaining a level through repeated blows, he enthusiastically supports the method. Tianshuo’s introduction to the household also reveals Dugu Bo’s sharply contrasting treatment of his son and granddaughter 4.
Hereditary Poison and the Academy Conflict
Dugu Bo and Dugu Yuan suffer from the innate poison of their Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor martial souls. Tianshuo notices the same underlying problem in Dugu Yan and proposes forcing the poison into soul bones, alongside a Soul Core cultivation technique. Dugu Bo recognizes that the claimed “ancient text” is probably an excuse, but values his disciple’s willingness to help the family rather than demanding his secrets 7.
While seeking soul-bone leads at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Dugu Bo allows Tianshuo to gain combat experience against Xue Beng’s entourage. He intervenes when a Spirit King threatens serious injury, then kills the attacker with poison. Xue Qinghe offers him a 40,000-year Poison Demon Tree torso bone and an invitation to imperial conferment, which he accepts 6 7 8.
The Herb Garden and Earth Dragon Expedition
Dugu Bo gives Tianshuo access to his herb garden at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well. Tianshuo identifies medicinal resources for Dugu Yuan’s damaged soul and Dugu Yan’s future development. When Dugu Bo later finds the garden withered and a powerful golden dragon emerging from the lake, he assumes his disciple has been killed and prepares to fight—until the dragon identifies itself as Tianshuo 13 16.
The family subsequently travels to the Tianling Mountain Range while searching for dragon remains and a suitable ninth ring. Inside the Earth Dragon King’s small world, Dugu Bo breaks free of bloodline suppression to aid Tianshuo. After his time-freezing skill fails, he overexerts his Soul Core and shields his disciple with his serpent avatar, dying under the attacks 21 22 23 24.
Tianshuo places the Firm Investment Device into Dugu Bo’s remains, enabling his resurrection. Dugu Bo rushes back toward the battlefield and later helps stabilize his disciple after the Earth Dragon King’s absorption. Their reunion is followed by a stern lecture about entering dangerous places without sufficient strength 25 26 27 28.
Imperial Recognition and Later Family Life
After obtaining his ninth ring, Dugu Bo returns to Heaven Dou City in a youthful body. Emperor Xue Ye, startled by both his appearance and his hundred-thousand-year ring, resolves to offer additional soul bones to strengthen their alliance 30 31 32.
Dugu Bo also supports Tianshuo against the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. He pierces Yu Yuanzhen with his dragon tail, leaving the clan master unconscious, then walks away drinking milk. His imperial recognition ceremony includes an exhibition match for Tianshuo 43 45 50.
When Tianshuo remains away for three months, Dugu Bo prepares poison-based leverage against the power behind Na’er. He instead negotiates with Gu Yue at the Lake of Life after discovering the overwhelming strength of her bloodline 82 83.
Later, he agrees to release the contracted Water and Earth Dragon Kings rather than preserve a grudge at the expense of greater benefits. During the celebration of Tianshuo’s new name, Ai Tianshuo, he accepts their apologies and welcomes them as family 103 113.
Appearance
- Original appearance: Green hair, emerald-like eyes, and a beard that he strokes while speaking 3.
- Youthful appearance: His body returns to youth after his martial soul evolution. Emperor Xue Ye recognizes a strong resemblance to Dugu Bo’s younger self 30 32.
- Evolved martial soul possession: Emerald dragon scales, forehead horns, increased stature, a dragon tail, and dragon wings 30.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud of his poison arts and enjoys acknowledgment of their danger. He is difficult to deceive: he identifies Tianshuo’s concealed family background and uses pressure to establish that his new disciple cannot easily fool him. He also initially resists becoming more tightly bound to the Heaven Dou court 3 7.
His sternness conceals intense affection for his household. He disciplines Dugu Yuan harshly, immediately softens around Dugu Yan, and regards protecting the family as his responsibility until his son and disciple can stand on their own. His willingness to die for Tianshuo makes that conviction literal 4 17 24.
Tianshuo’s extraordinary knowledge both delights and troubles him. He privately fears that greed might tempt him to betray his disciple and resolves to cultivate more diligently so he can protect him instead. After his rejuvenation, he becomes noticeably more playful, impulsive, and prone to joining the household’s chaotic fights 12 30 31.
Despite his ruthlessness toward enemies, he can set aside resentment when cooperation offers a better future. His acceptance of the Dragon Kings’ apologies combines practical judgment with a genuine desire to bring them into the family 103 113.

Seventh Soul Skill: Martial Soul Avatar
- Manifests his Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor form 16 24.

- Can be deployed on a small scale to escape Tianshuo’s restraining embrace 40.

Jade Phosphor Dragon Evolution
- His completed evolution produces a full dragon-type martial soul with bloodline strength described as capable of rivaling a Dragon King 30.
- Dragon wings grant him flight 31.
- Tempering through Tianshuo’s essence blood gives him some resistance to his disciple’s bloodline pressure, allowing him to watch the Qian Daoliu battle from close range 96.
