Background / History

Kushina first appears shortly before Naruto's birth as the pregnant wife of the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato. She and Mikoto are close friends, and Kushina has already chosen Naruto as her child's name 33.

During the Nine-Tails attack, Chen enters her home while she is with the newborn Naruto. Kushina attempts to defend herself with Adamantine Sealing Chains, but Chen subdues her with the Sharingan and leaves after promising that she will see Naruto grow up 38. She subsequently dies alongside Minato during the incident.

Chen later resurrects Kushina in the Kamui dimension. Mistaking his space-time appearance for Obito's, she attacks him with her chains and refuses his explanation until Mikoto arrives to comfort her 48 49. Mikoto tells Kushina that Chen used Izanagi to revive her, emphasizing its supposed cost and encouraging Kushina's concern for him 50 51.

Unable to return openly to Konoha because she is officially dead, Kushina agrees to stay with the Uchiha clan. Although she has developed affection for Chen, Minato's recent death initially prevents her from accepting those feelings 52.

Kushina is introduced as a striking woman with vivid red hair described as flame-like. Her late pregnancy gives her a visibly maternal appearance 33.

Personality

Kushina is intensely maternal and protective of Naruto. Her inability to see or protect him after being revived causes profound grief, and witnessing his treatment within the Tsukuyomi illusion turns that grief into anger toward those she believes failed him 55 60 66.

She is determined and confrontational when Naruto is threatened. Even while trapped in an illusion, she investigates the origin of rumors about him, follows Kakashi for information, and resolves to uncover the people responsible 60 61. Her rage toward Obito remains especially severe because she sees him as the cause of her lost life with Minato and Naruto 73.

Later, Kushina becomes more strategic. She uses herself and Naruto as bait to draw Obito out, then signals Chen once she detects the intruder's spatial disturbance 334.

Remaining with the Uchiha Clan

Mikoto convinces Kushina that revealing her survival would endanger Chen. Kushina chooses to remain with the Uchiha clan, even though she desperately wants to reunite with Naruto 51 52.

Tsukuyomi and Naruto's Future

Fugaku places Kushina under Tsukuyomi after promising to show her Naruto's future. Chen secretly guides elements of the illusion, which shows Naruto being isolated, abused by caretakers, and treated as a “demon fox” by the village 57 58 60 61.

The illusion intensifies Kushina's resolve to protect Naruto. An illusory version of her reaches Naruto, defeats his Anbu guards, and ultimately takes him out of Konoha after deciding that the village is unsafe for him 66 68 69.

After sharing what she witnessed with Chen, Kushina abandons her desire to destroy Konoha and instead plans to bring Naruto into the Kamui dimension so they can become a family 77. Kushina devises a plan to draw Obito out by inviting Chen to lunch while bringing Naruto to the Hokage Building. After sensing Obito's spatial presence, she gives Chen their prearranged warning signal, enabling his ambush 334 335.
