Background

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of the Leaf. Sakumo chose to save his companions rather than complete an S-rank-plus mission, then suffered public condemnation after the mission failed and ultimately took his own life. The experience deeply shaped Kakashi's belief that missions and Konoha's interests had to come first. 17

During the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Kakashi and Obito Uchiha entered an Iwagakure hideout to rescue Rin. Obito was crushed beneath a boulder after turning back to save Kakashi; before his apparent death, he entrusted Kakashi with his Sharingan. Team 7 Formation and Bell Test

Hiruzen places Lin Fan in Kakashi's squad so Kakashi can supervise the unusually dangerous potential of Team 7's members. 8

Kakashi introduces Naruto, Sasuke, and Lin Fan to the bell test by providing only two bells and warning that failure would mean a return to the Academy. He swiftly defeats Naruto and Sasuke, but Lin Fan traps him in a realistic Sharingan Memory Illusion based on Sakumo's suicide and Obito's apparent death. 16 17

Kakashi eventually breaks free, but the illusion has drained nearly all of his chakra. Lin Fan's remaining tactics force both combatants to collapse, allowing Naruto and Sasuke to secure the bells; Team 7 is then recognized as official genin. 17 18
