Background / History

First Cycle: Manji’s Disciple

At four or five years old, Indra studies reading alongside Asura under Hagoromo. His initial desire for power comes from encountering a wild wolf while gathering herbs: he wants to protect both himself and his brother. When Hagoromo refuses to teach him power, Indra searches for a talking toad that might lead him to Manji 37.

Manji eventually meets him in the Bamboo Forest and teaches him hand seals and chakra manipulation. Indra attends regardless of snow or rain and develops an intense attachment to his teacher, even falling asleep against him during practice. His subsequent demonstration of fire-producing jutsu leads Hagoromo to spread the method throughout the sect 38 39.

Manji later stages his own death through an illusion. Believing his grandmaster has been killed, Indra awakens the Three-Tomoe Sharingan directly. Manji reveals the deception, explains his new eyes, and ends their Bamboo Forest lessons 40.

Succession Crisis

As a young man, Indra becomes the Ninja Sect’s benchmark for technical skill, but his severe treatment of disciples and refusal to hear other opinions concern Hagoromo. Confident that he deserves the succession, he swiftly completes a village assignment intended to test leadership 41 42.

Hagoromo chooses Asura instead. He explains that Indra solved the village’s immediate problem through power, but failed to establish lasting cooperation; the village was subsequently destroyed in a dispute over water. Indra interprets the decision as favoritism and demands loyalty from the disciples he taught. Sarutobi openly chooses Asura, while the others remain silent under Indra’s intimidation 43 44.

Indra manifests Susanoo and attacks the sect that night. Asura counters with Hagoromo’s inherited Six Paths power and chakra supplied by the disciples. When Asura’s Thousand-Handed Buddha overwhelms him, Manji intervenes to save and heal Indra 44 45 46.

Hagoromo insists that Indra must die to prevent a future catastrophe, rejecting Manji’s offer to take responsibility for him. After the resulting confrontation, Indra abandons his claim to the sect and leaves with Manji for Mount Myōboku. Hagoromo’s death nevertheless leaves him shaken despite his hostility 47 50.

Uchiha Foundation and Millennium Pact

Indra redirects his ambition toward defeating Asura. After another narrow loss, he asks Fukasaku and Black Zetsu for assistance, but both uphold Mount Myōboku’s neutrality. Their suggestion that he build a family and following prompts him to establish his own force 51 52.

Over the following decade, Indra creates a martial organization, recruits subordinates, cooperates with countries, and controls a national general to obtain wealth and land. This lineage becomes the Uchiha Clan 52 53.

After a duel ends in stalemate, Indra and Asura ask Manji to oversee a thousand-year contest between their reincarnations. Manji extracts portions of their souls with his Rinnegan and seals them within the Totsuka Blade’s hilt to facilitate the pact 53 54.

Indra receives news of Asura’s death three months late and reacts with resentment, melancholy, and emptiness. He instructs his young grandson to destroy the Ninja Sect before dying himself. His body disappears during the wake and is preserved by Manji in the Toad Immortal Land 56.

Pure Land and Return to the Mortal World

Nearly a millennium later, Manji restores Indra and Asura in the Pure Land. Indra learns that the Ninja Sect fell eight hundred years earlier and that his reincarnations lead the Millennium Pact 4–3. He mocks the sect’s weak institutions while privately regretting the destruction of something he helped build 168.

Meeting his descendants reveals that later Sharingan users suffer visual deterioration he never experienced. He also condemns Uchiha Fox’s willingness to kill someone he loved for power. Despite Hagoromo’s wish for reconciliation, Indra refuses to visit him and returns to his clan 170 171 173.

Bored with the Pure Land, Indra returns to inspect the mortal world and his descendants. As part of the Impure World Reincarnation army, he defeats Might Duy even after Duy opens the Eight Inner Gates. Later Cycle: History Without Manji’s Mentorship

In the later cycle, Indra develops hand seals independently at seven and teaches them to his mother, Lin Xiaoxiao. Hagoromo again chooses Asura after contrasting their force-based and cooperative approaches to village missions 380 381 382.

Indra breaks with his brother and attacks the Ninja Sect to take their mother away. Asura and his followers defeat him; Indra escapes and establishes his clan separately. Lin Xiaoxiao disappears during the conflict 382 385.

His talent gradually hardens into entitlement. He equates strength, efficiency, and his contributions to the sect with a right to rule, treating dissent as betrayal. Losing the succession turns this conviction into violent resentment and an enduring obsession with surpassing Asura 41 43 44 52.

His attachments remain selective but genuine. He deeply loves Manji, feels emptiness at Asura’s death, and regrets the sect’s destruction beneath his mockery. Although willing to use ruthless methods, he would not kill someone he loves merely to gain power 40 56 168 171.
