Background / History

Hagoromo was born to Ōtsutsuki Kaguya alongside his younger brother, Hamura. Raised to regard the God Tree as a sacred source of life, he initially accepted Kaguya's teachings without question. Gamamaru led the brothers to observe the dead wasteland surrounding the tree, forcing Hagoromo to confront the fact that it was draining the land rather than nourishing it. 15

His doubts became certainty after he discovered a cavern beneath the God Tree filled with human cocoons. There, he found Haori dead among the sacrifices; the trauma awakened his Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 16 362 Hagoromo later turned against both Kaguya and the outsider occupying Hamura's body after learning the truth of the sacrifices. 364

In a later account, Manji first warned Hagoromo that Hamura's body had been taken over and that Kaguya was producing White Zetsu through human sacrifice. Initially distrustful of this revelation, Hagoromo eventually confirmed the truth for himself beneath the God Tree and accepted his duty to destroy it, seal Kaguya, and save the world. 361 362 363

Manji became Hagoromo's mentor, teaching him senjutsu, philosophy, and the need to build strength before seeking revenge. Hagoromo regarded Manji with deep reverence, having grown up on stories of the legendary figure and made offerings at Manji Temple. 19 Even after their eventual conflict over Indra, Hagoromo continued to acknowledge Manji as his teacher. 47 49

Personality

Hagoromo is compassionate, humble, and deeply committed to protecting ordinary people. Though capable of using overwhelming chakra to build the Ninja Sect's headquarters instantly, he chose to labor beside his followers, believing unity—not raw power—was the sect's foundation. 27

He is also resolute when the world is threatened. Hagoromo was prepared to oppose Kaguya, Hamura, and even Indra despite their family bond, judging that no relationship outweighed the safety of the world. 45 His grief over Haori's death and the collapse of his family remained a central source of pain, but Manji's guidance pushed him to turn that grief into action. 365

After defeating Kaguya in the later account, Hagoromo used his power to heal damaged land and assist civilians rather than merely display his strength. He remained protective of the mortal world and sternly warned Gamamaru against interfering in human affairs. 370 371

Hagoromo also worried about the consequences of spreading power. He authorized the Ninja Sect's adoption of hand seals so its disciples could protect people and put chakra to practical use, while recognizing that the same knowledge might fuel future conflict. Near the end of his life, his concern for the sect's survival led him to favor a successor from his own family and ask Manji to protect its legacy. 39 41

In the later account, Hagoromo infiltrates the God Tree alone, finds Haori among its victims, and identifies the being occupying Hamura's body as an outsider. This discovery drives him to openly oppose Kaguya and resolve to destroy the God Tree. 362 364

Training Under Manji

After meeting Manji at Mount Myōboku, Hagoromo learns the truth about Kaguya's betrayal and trains in senjutsu. He develops profound respect for Manji as both a teacher and the hero of the stories from his childhood. 17 19

In the later account, Hagoromo seeks Manji out after fleeing Kaguya and Tenseigan Hamura. Manji heals him, teaches him Mount Myōboku Immortal Art, and urges him to build a foundation before confronting his family. 365

War Against Kaguya

Hagoromo confronts Kaguya, is forced to battle a controlled Hamura, and awakens the Rinnegan. He later fights alongside Hamura and Manji against Kaguya and helps seal her through Chibaku Tensei. 20 22 23

A later account instead has Hagoromo receive Rinnegan and Six Paths Power from Manji, defeat Kaguya and Hamura in direct combat, use Six Paths: Planetary Devastation, and divide the Ten-Tails into the nine Tailed Beasts. 365 366 367 369

Afterward, Hagoromo traveled the world repairing the scars left by Kaguya and the God Tree, restoring rivers and barren land while helping affected civilians. 370

Founding of the Ninja Sect

Following Kaguya's defeat, Hagoromo established the Ninja Sect to spread chakra, compassion, and peace. He named Manji its founder and had him honored worldwide as the Sage of Six Paths, a title derived from the Six Paths Sword. 27

As nations developed and conflicts increased, Hagoromo chose to teach hand seals throughout the Ninja Sect. He accepted Sarutobi's argument that disciples could use chakra to defend themselves, farm, build, and protect others, despite his misgivings about the potential for violence. 39

Succession Crisis

As he aged, Hagoromo tested Indra and Asura to determine the Ninja Sect's successor. He chose Asura because of his capacity for empathy and connection, despite Indra's superior talent and efficiency. 41 42 43

Indra's resentment culminated in an attack on the Ninja Sect. Hagoromo was prepared to oppose and, if necessary, kill his own son to protect the world, but Manji intervened to take Indra away for training. 45 47

In a later account, Indra's attack and his battle with Asura were followed by the unexplained disappearance of Hagoromo's wife Reiko. Hagoromo searched the ruined rear courtyard and worried about where she had gone. 382 385

Final Conflict and Death

Hagoromo fought Manji when Manji intervened to take Indra away for training. Despite having passed part of his power to Asura, Hagoromo fought at immense strength and absorbed Manji's sage-energy attack to protect the land below. 48 He later died after entrusting his Rinnegan to Manji; his soul was subsequently sealed within the eye. 50 51

Pure Land and Reincarnation

After his death, Hagoromo remained active in the Pure Land, where he preached his philosophy to residents from the major ninja clans through widely watched lectures. 167 He also helped manage the Pure Land and joined a group conversation with Manji, Gamamaru, and the Tailed Beasts, calling it a place that would welcome scientific ninja tools. 207 246

During the Fourth Ninja World War, Uchiha Hikari included Hagoromo among the historical figures reincarnated through the Impure World Reincarnation. Hikari said she had reinforced their bodies with Dragon Vein Immortal Art and Ōtsutsuki cells to reproduce their living power. Manji severed Hikari's control over the reincarnated army upon arriving on the battlefield. 342
