Background and History
Manji’s disciple
Gamamaru first appears as an orphan brought before the White-Browed Toad. He tells Manji that his dreams come true—including a dream that he will one day lead Mount Myōboku. Manji signs a contract with him and invites him to live nearby. Over the following years, Gamamaru becomes his disciple 11 12.
On Manji’s instructions, Gamamaru approaches Hagoromo and Hamura and shows them the barren land surrounding the God Tree. Rather than demanding their trust, he urges them to investigate it themselves. After they discover the sacrifices beneath the tree, he brings them to Manji 14 15 16 17. Before the battle with Kaguya, he coordinates toads to warn civilians and direct them to West Mountain Canyon 19 20.
With Manji remaining in charge of Mount Myōboku, Gamamaru has time to pursue research. He investigates steam power, invents a camera, and develops scientific ninja tools. He also manages the mountain’s affairs 71 108 207 225.
Alternate history
In the later alternate history, Gamamaru acts under the White-Browed Toad’s direction rather than as Manji’s disciple. He attempts to approach Hagoromo and Hamura, but Hamura attacks him before he can deliver his warning about the God Tree 359 360. After Kaguya is sealed, Gamamaru follows Hagoromo and discovers him using Mount Myōboku’s Immortal Art. Hagoromo refuses to explain its source, and Gamamaru reports the matter to the White-Browed Toad 369 370 371.
The White-Browed Toad appoints Gamamaru his successor before dying 381. Much later, Uchiha Fox defeats Gamamaru and Mount Myōboku’s defenders, then forces an agreement to study Immortal Art there. Gamamaru permits it on the condition that Fox leave afterward 407 408. Manji subsequently gives the injured Gamamaru a Toad Immortal Talisman, but warns him not to reveal Manji’s existence 409 412.
Appearance
Gamamaru grows from a small frog into a large toad; old age visibly weakens him in both histories 11 26 157 406.
- Earlier history: Chubby as a young toad; later massive, with wrinkled skin and clouded eyes before Manji restores him 14 157.
- Alternate history: A gigantic, visibly aged toad with deeply grooved skin and murky but sharp eyes 407.
