History

Unification under the Lion King

Britain lacked a king until Leon drew the Sword in the Stone, establishing a legal claim to the throne. Knights and lords then pledged themselves to him as the “Lion King,” hoping for security, titles, and wealth through his rule. 1 2

Leon seized Camelot after defeating the rebel army outside its walls. His victory intimidated the capital into surrender, while captured soldiers and materiel were incorporated into his expanding forces. 6 7

Over subsequent campaigns, Leon defeated the King of Orkney, pacified the north, reclaimed territory from Vortigern, conquered the Saxons, and brought Ireland under British control. These victories made his legitimacy effectively unquestionable among most of the population. 11 13 30 32

Centralization and Industrialization

After Mordred's birth, Leon introduced reforms across politics, land ownership, military organization, and noble titles. He strengthened centralized government through a commandery-county system, restricted noble privileges, and made titles subject to demotion when descendants failed to earn merit. 32

Leon also began Britain's industrial development by producing steam engines, spinning jennies, carrack-style ships, steel, cement, and other early industrial technologies. He founded the British Navy after the Irish campaign, initially organizing it into two chiliarchies led by decorated fishermen. 30 32 35

The development of factories and railways accelerated the decline of mystery and damaged Britain's remaining ether-rich environment, becoming a central point of conflict between Leon and Morgan. 23 36 37

Morgan's Rebellion

Morgan rebelled while Britain's army was preparing to invade Rome. After replicating the spell structure of Rhongomyniad, she used her Water Mirror magecraft to bombard British factories, trains, and industrial infrastructure with descending Holy Spears. 38 39

During the crisis, Britain was transformed into a colossal humanoid giant of stone and earth, with the chalk-white royal city upon its shoulders and its lower body fused into the island itself. 45 46

Leon chose to defeat Rome before returning to address the rebellion, reasoning that Britain could be rebuilt after the external threat had been eliminated. 39

Imperial Expansion

Britain defeated Lucius's Rome after Leon personally killed the Roman Emperor and shattered the opposing army. 43

By the time of Academy City's establishment, Roman territory had been reclaimed, Persia's Sassanid Dynasty and the Middle East had been conquered, and territories near the Black and Caspian Seas had been incorporated into the Empire. 92

Academy City later opened to applicants of any social background who possessed virtue and talent, serving as a major institution for education within the British Empire. 109

Magical Significance

Britain is closely connected to Vortigern, the White Dragon and Vile King. Merlin describes Vortigern as the will and avatar of the British Isles: a former tribal lord who drank dragon blood, became a demonic dragon, and turned the island into his own flesh. 12

Vortigern sought to destroy Britain and return it to primordial darkness, creating a land where humanity could not survive. He stands in direct opposition to Artoria, the Red Dragon naturally destined to rule Britain. 12

The island's fading mystery creates practical problems as well as spiritual ones. The decline of mystery reduced grain production, while industrial development further weakened the remaining True Ether on the island. 23 37
