Background / History

Merlin first appears before Leon, Artoria, and Kay in a shower of red and pink petals. He recognizes Leon as king because Leon drew the Sword in the Stone, though he cannot promise that every figure in Camelot will accept the result. Leon immediately identifies Merlin as the only member of the court he considers dangerous. 3

His Clairvoyance cannot perceive Leon except when they stand face-to-face. After examining the Sword in the Stone, Merlin realizes Leon did not meet its intended qualifications; he forcibly pulled it free despite magecraft connected to the leylines. Merlin removes the sword's magecraft rather than risk a confrontation that could endanger Artoria and Kay. 3 4

Initially wary of Leon, Merlin hides Artoria and urges her to avoid the Lion King. He regards Leon as an unobservable outsider—possibly an “Angel” from beyond the world—and suspects the Counter Force has acknowledged him. 5 7 His relationship with Leon remains tense after Leon threatens executions in Camelot, as Merlin recognizes the king's capacity for ruthless violence. 8

Despite this distrust, Merlin becomes one of Leon's most important advisors. He explains Vortigern's nature, helps modify Leon's Holy Spear with limited stored activations, provides intelligence on the Spirit Tomb Albion and the young dragon later named Neltharion, and keeps watch over Britain and its enemies. 11 12 32 33

During Morgan's rebellion, Merlin discovers her plan to revive Vortigern and transform Britain through the Dragon Heart. Injured while investigating the Artificial God and its black spear, he nevertheless coordinates Britain's response: he summons Artoria, empowers Artoria's party through his sea of flowers, heals Lancelot, and guides Artoria through the summoning ritual needed to counter Vortigern's immortality. 42 44 46 48 49

In later years, Merlin teaches swordsmanship, military strategy, and martial arts to the younger generation, including Mordred. His emotional investment in Mordred becomes increasingly evident when the child is critically injured. He also heals a severely wounded Leon with petal-based magecraft. 102 115 133 184 185

Merlin ultimately announces his departure from the royal palace and relinquishes his role as Leon's advisor, with Leon approving the decision. 203
