Background / History

Piccolo originates from King Piccolo, the evil counterpart of Earth’s guardian Kami. When King Piccolo is defeated, he leaves behind an egg containing a stronger reincarnation; because Kami and King Piccolo are linked, eliminating the latter would also kill Kami and destroy Earth’s Dragon Balls. Sun Wuxiu therefore allows the reincarnation’s future return rather than killing Kami alongside him 25 27.

As the Demon Second Generation, Piccolo trains continuously for five years after losing to Goku at the World Martial Arts Tournament. His ambition remains to claim Earth, but he refuses to allow invading Saiyans to threaten what he considers his planet. He fights alongside Goku against Raditz, then leaves to train independently before Vegeta and Nappa arrive 34 37 40.

Sun Wuxiu later places Gohan under Piccolo’s care for a year. Piccolo initially frames his decision as an interest in Gohan’s talent and warns that his training will be brutal, but accepts responsibility for the child’s development. He also sees Gohan as a valuable future sparring partner 42.

His earlier identity as King Piccolo is defined by arrogance and violence, but his later actions show restraint. After receiving his full potential, he deliberately avoids using his newfound strength to humiliate Vegeta or provoke Goku, recognizing that power should be used to protect Earth rather than control him 267.

In battle, Piccolo is pragmatic and ruthless.
