Background / History
Vegeta arrives on Earth with Nappa seeking the Dragon Balls and revenge against Sun Wuxiu. Unlike Nappa, he immediately recognizes that the Earthlings are suppressing their actual combat power; he also threatens to kill Sun Wuxiu’s companions to make his enemy suffer. 46
After Nappa’s defeat, Vegeta attempts to use the Great Ape transformation. Since Earth’s moon has been destroyed, he generates an Artificial Moon himself and reaches 180,000 combat power in Great Ape form. 49 Despite his eventual defeat, he refuses to beg for mercy and insists on his identity as the Saiyan prince. 51
On Namek, Vegeta’s composure collapses as he senses that Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, and Tien have grown far beyond his expectations. His resentment deepens when Goku achieves Super Saiyan in secret and Trunks subsequently displays the same form. 59 77 80 81 Sun Wuxiu repeatedly humiliates and dismisses him during the conflict, while Vegeta later refuses to return to Earth with the group despite listening in on their discussion of Super Saiyan training. 61 72
Vegeta eventually withdraws from Capsule Corp to train alone with a portable Gravity Chamber. After three years of relentless training, he returns as a Super Saiyan and decisively destroys Android 19 with his Big Bang Attack. 93 97
His confidence is immediately challenged by Android 17, whose infinite energy lets him outlast and defeat Vegeta. Watching Goku battle Android 17 evenly intensifies Vegeta’s frustration over continually falling behind his rival. 99 101
Vegeta’s tail eventually regrows, restoring his access to the Saiyan bloodline’s primal power and intensifying his desire to master Super Saiyan 4. 171 Sun Wuxiu later removes the obstruction preventing his tail’s regeneration and gives him a special Senzu Bean intended to guide him toward Super Saiyan 4; Vegeta agrees to delay using it in order to spend a day with Elena and Trunks. 183 184
Years later, Vegeta reaches Super Saiyan 4 and challenges Sun Wuxiu, believing he has reached the Saiyan race’s ultimate form. Sun Wuxiu warns him that greater powers still exist. 174 During the conflict with Broly, Vegeta pushes through Golden Great Ape and forces a direct evolution into Super Saiyan 4, though Broly’s berserk Legendary Super Saiyan power remains superior. 241
During the Omega Shenron crisis, Vegeta initially holds back after recognizing Goku’s grief and sensing Omega Shenron’s abnormal strength. When Omega targets the weakened Goku, Vegeta intercepts the death ray with Final Flash and takes Goku’s place in the fight. 220 222
In the martial arts tournament, Vegeta faces a far more experienced GT counterpart masquerading as “King.” The opponent’s insight into Vegeta’s habits forces him into Super Saiyan 2, provokes his rage-boosted power, and ultimately exposes the gap between Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 4 Full Power and a state beyond it. 286 291 294 296
After receiving Whis’s instruction, Vegeta pursues Divine Power as a means to advance Super Saiyan 4 further. He eventually achieves Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker during Frieza’s attack, though even this form cannot defeat Frieza’s black-gold transformation alone. 406 457 460 461
Appearance
Vegeta is a short, compactly built Saiyan with gravity-defying hair and a consistently stern, arrogant expression. He commonly wears Saiyan battle armor or a dark blue bodysuit with a white combat vest. 46 93
- Black, sharply upright hair in base form. 46
- Green eyes in Super Saiyan 4. 174
- Super Saiyan 4 features crimson fur over his upper body, long black hair, a red tail, and red eyeliner. 174
- Super Saiyan 2 is marked by a volatile golden aura and blue lightning. 289
- Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker emits a purplish-red aura. 457 458
Personality
Vegeta is fiercely proud of his status as the Saiyan prince and measures himself constantly against Goku and Sun Wuxiu. He reacts poorly to humiliation, especially when others attain transformations or strength before him; these setbacks repeatedly drive him into harsher training. 80 81 113
Though arrogant and frequently dismissive of others, Vegeta possesses sharp combat instincts. He identifies suppressed power levels on Earth, recognizes when Omega Shenron is too dangerous to approach recklessly, and eventually learns not to rush blindly into every major fight. 46 220 450
His family is a major emotional vulnerability. GT Vegeta’s use of Vegeta’s family to provoke him triggers an explosive surge in power, while Sun Wuxiu successfully persuades him to postpone a transformation-related Senzu Bean so that he will spend a day at an amusement park with Elena and Trunks. 184 291
Vegeta remains highly competitive even when acting as an observer. He resents being placed late in the Universe 6 tournament lineup, grows frustrated when Goku advances beyond him, and views every newly revealed Saiyan power as a challenge to overcome. 305 314 476
Despite his pride, Vegeta is capable of pragmatic cooperation. He and Goku coordinate effectively against Sun Wuxiu, and he later abandons his usual insistence on a one-on-one battle to join Goku against Frieza. 177 461
