Background / History

Appointment as Qin Chuan’s Guardian

Scarlet King had participated in attempts to capture otherworldly intruders. He remembered their arrogance and threats to skin soul beasts, refine them into medicine, or enslave them as mounts. Despite successful captures, the Great Beasts had been unable to prevent these outsiders from escaping through inexplicable methods 29 31.

After the Silver Dragon King agreed to exchange her assistance for passage to Green Green Grassland, Di Tian assigned Scarlet King to protect Qin Chuan. The assignment also served as surveillance: Scarlet King was instructed to observe Qin Chuan and discover how otherworldly beings escaped captivity. Qin Chuan understood this hidden purpose but welcomed the protection 27 28 29.

Departure from the Life Lake

Scarlet King assumed human form and carried Qin Chuan out of the hidden world beneath the Life Lake. His concealed aura initially prevented the Sky Azure Bull Python from recognizing him as a threat 29.

When the Titan Giant Ape attacked Qin Chuan over his previous conflict with Xiao Wu, Scarlet King intercepted it with a single punch. He sent the ape flying while inflicting only minor skin wounds. The Sky Azure Bull Python apologized and offered Qin Chuan Life Spirit Gold as compensation 30.

Scarlet King envied Qin Chuan’s acquisition of two pieces of Life Spirit Gold in two days. He estimated that receiving Di Tian’s piece himself would give him a ninety-percent chance of surviving his approaching 300,000-year heavenly tribulation 30.

Journey toward Heaven Dou City

Scarlet King accompanied Qin Chuan’s search for poisonous soul beasts. His aura kept other beasts from obstructing their passage, though he questioned why Qin Chuan was killing toxic creatures that could not be eaten 31 32.

Before entering human settlements, Qin Chuan asked him to conceal his identity, avoid unnecessary action, and remain inconspicuous. Scarlet King complied. During Qin Chuan’s refugee-relief efforts, he spent time separately in nearby towns without causing trouble 32 33.

Battle with Tang Hao

During the renewed confrontation with Shrek Academy, Scarlet King withheld his strength at Qin Chuan’s request to lure Tang Hao out of hiding. He nevertheless questioned whether Qin Chuan could handle Flender and Zhao Wuji together 34.

Scarlet King intervened after Qin Chuan obtained a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Bone from Tang Hao. Seeing the lingering aura of a powerful soul beast enraged him, turning the fight into a determined attempt to kill Tang Hao. He defeated the Clear Sky Douluo, but Liu An’s escape method removed Tang Hao, Tang San, and Liu An before he could finish them 37 38.

After their disappearance, Scarlet King directed his killing intent toward the remaining Shrek members. Qin Chuan persuaded him to leave them alone and continue toward Heaven Dou City 39.

God Realm Catastrophe and Temporary Separation

In Heaven Dou City, Scarlet King witnessed the destruction of the God Realm. Shortly afterward, Qin Chuan pushed him aside to evade an attack from a Soul Douluo driven mad by the spectacle. This consideration improved Scarlet King’s impression of him 39 40.

At Qin Chuan’s request, Scarlet King suppressed the man’s turbulent sea of consciousness and restored his sanity. He also advised Qin Chuan to accept the Crown Prince’s invitation because imperial intelligence might help locate the remaining poisonous materials 40.

The pair returned to their hotel after visiting the palace. The next morning, they separated to complete different tasks while Qin Chuan went to Sunset Forest 41.

Scarlet King is laconic, cold, and deliberately incurious. He limits his involvement to guarding and observing Qin Chuan, reasoning that excessive curiosity would have endangered his survival over his long life. Human suffering, including the aftermath of a beast tide, does not move him, and he declines to participate in Qin Chuan’s relief work 32 33 39.

His concern for soul beasts is selective. Although fierce beasts generally disregard the deaths of low-level members of their race, Scarlet King strongly protects Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts because of the lethal trials required to reach that cultivation. Tang Hao’s soul bone provokes immediate murderous anger 37.

His duty to Qin Chuan is initially pragmatic rather than affectionate. Nevertheless, he considers Qin Chuan essential to the future of the soul beast race and its sovereign, making his protection a responsibility worth dying for. Qin Chuan’s later attempt to shield him earns genuine personal approval 28 38 40.
