Background / History
The Guardian is a Namekian sent from Planet Namek as a child during an environmental crisis that devastated its population. The Namekian Grand Elder dispatched him into space to find another world, after which he became Earth's Guardian. His extraterrestrial origin is confirmed when he uses telepathy to verify that Sun Yu is telling the truth about Namek and Frieza. 13
Sun Yu and Lana first reach the Lookout after climbing Korin Tower. The Guardian receives them cautiously, recognizing their Saiyan heritage and the heavy karmic burden associated with it. He initially refuses to train them despite their request for cultivation guidance. 12 13
After Sun Yu warns that Frieza may eventually target Namek and offers the Saiyans' future strength against him, the Guardian agrees to guide them. He first entrusts Korin with teaching ki suppression, then personally introduces Sun Yu to the higher principles of ki cultivation. 13 16
Following Android 19's attack, the Guardian becomes deeply concerned that more androids may exist. Acknowledging that he cannot defend Earth from threats of that scale, he entrusts its protection to Sun Yu. 24
Appearance
The Guardian is an elderly Namekian who resides at the Lookout above Korin Tower. 12 13
- Described as old and physically frail compared with Sun Yu and Lana. 13
- Maintains a stern, reserved demeanor when first assessing unfamiliar visitors. 13
Personality
The Guardian is cautious and morally discerning. He can perceive the negative karma borne by Sun Yu and Lana, yet distinguishes their actions from inherent evil; despite his reservations, he believes proper guidance may turn them toward righteousness. 13 14
As a teacher, he is patient and philosophical. He emphasizes gradual cultivation, control of desire, and the connection between state of mind and martial ability. He specifically worries that Lana's competitiveness could lead her astray. 16
His confidence is shaken by the android threat. Rather than falsely claiming he can protect Earth alone, he openly relies on Sun Yu's greater power. 24
Abilities & Skills
Telepathy
The Guardian can determine whether another person is lying through telepathic ability. He uses it to confirm Sun Yu's account of Namek, Frieza, and his knowledge of the future. 13
- Allows him to assess Sun Yu's sincerity.
- Does not prevent Sun Yu from presenting Frieza as a shared enemy to persuade him. 13
Karma Perception
As Earth's Guardian, he can perceive the negative karma carried by others. 14
- He recognizes the karmic burden associated with Sun Yu and Lana's Saiyan past. 13
- He does not interpret karmic burden as proof that a person is irredeemably evil. 14
Ki Cultivation Knowledge
The Guardian teaches a three-stage framework for ki mastery: Micro-Perception, Knowledge Realm, and Empty Clarity. 16
- Micro-Perception — integrating ki with breathing so it can rise and fall at will. 16
- Knowledge Realm — using intent and state of mind to perceive or impose the attributes of things. 16
- Empty Clarity — reaching a state in which one's presence and ki become nearly impossible to sense. 16
- He uses Mr. Popo's demonstrations to explain the latter two realms. 16
Limitations
The Guardian is not a combat-focused fighter and lacks the power to intervene against enemies such as Android 19. 20 24
- He is overwhelmed by Lana's uncontrolled aura after her Hyperbolic Time Chamber training. 24
- Earth's defense ultimately depends on Sun Yu rather than the Guardian himself. 24
Relationships
- Sun Yu — Initially refuses to train him due to his Saiyan heritage and karmic burden; later becomes his cultivation guide after accepting the threat Frieza poses to Namek and Earth. 13 16
- Lana — Regards her as powerful but dangerously driven by a desire to win; worries that her temperament may hinder her cultivation. 16
- Mr. Popo — Attendant at the Lookout who carries out the Guardian's instructions and demonstrates advanced ki realms for Sun Yu. 12 16
- Korin — Fellow resident of Korin Sacred Land; the Guardian orders Korin to begin Sun Yu and Lana's ki-suppression training. 13
- Bulma — Meets her at the Lookout while she accompanies Sun Yu; her faith in Sun Yu helps reassure the Guardian about Earth's future. 24
