Technique Overview

Wind Release: Great Breakthrough is a C-rank Wind Release technique that generates a powerful gale. It can serve as a long-range attack, a defensive response to incoming ninjutsu, or a means of manipulating an opponent's movement. Shiro initially learned it because he needed a ranged option while unable to perform elemental releases other than Wind Release. 2

History

Shiro learned Wind Release: Great Breakthrough early in his ninja career as the only elemental ninjutsu he could use. His magecraft origin appeared to conflict with his chakra nature, preventing him from performing the other four basic elemental releases; Great Breakthrough therefore filled his lack of long-range firepower. 2

Although Shiro initially presented himself as capable of teaching additional Wind Release techniques, Great Breakthrough was in fact the only Wind Release ninjutsu he could truly perform at the time. He nevertheless had Okita and Saori continue practicing it, emphasizing that proficiency mattered more than immediately learning further techniques. 30

Later, Shiro retained the technique as a reliable foundational Wind Release despite acquiring more advanced options. Its simplicity allowed it to be adapted for suppression, movement, battlefield control, and exceptionally high-output attacks when backed by Blood Maiden or Shiro's greatly increased chakra reserves. 200 355
