Technique Overview

Wind Release: Great Breakthrough is a C-rank Wind Release technique that generates a powerful gale. It can serve as a long-range attack, a defensive response to incoming ninjutsu, or a means of manipulating an opponent's movement. Shiro initially learned it because he needed a ranged option while unable to perform elemental releases other than Wind Release. 2

Offensive Force

The technique's output depends heavily on the user's chakra volume and mastery.

  • Shiro's early use was sufficient to answer Yamada's Great Fireball Technique in combat. 13
  • Under the amplification of the Noble Phantasm Blood Maiden, Shiro's Great Breakthrough rose from C-rank power to nearly A-rank power and instantly defeated four genin. 23
  • During his battle with Pakura, Shiro poured enough chakra into the technique to create a gale described as having the force of a natural disaster; it shattered her Earth Style Wall and sent her flying. 355
  • Okita could perform the technique at a little over six years old, though his seal speed and output remained below C-rank standards. 30

Tactical Applications

  • Fire Release countermeasureShiro's Great Breakthrough scattered Mizuki's Great Fireball Technique in a head-on clash. 87
  • Mobility — A Sunagakure jōnin directed the technique at the ground to propel himself into the air, evading Nakamura's Wind Cutter Technique while gaining time to form further seals. 168
  • Area controlShiro fired the technique behind a wolf pack to frighten it toward a predetermined route enclosed by barriers. 200
  • Combined ninjutsu — When used alongside Fire Release, the wind can intensify flames. Jingxia's Great Breakthrough enlarged Tobi's Majestic Destroyer Flame during their assault on a small nation's city gate. 283
  • Emergency repositioning — Uchiha Yao used a hastily formed Great Breakthrough in midair to alter his trajectory and avoid Kakashi's fatal strike. 444

History

Shiro learned Wind Release: Great Breakthrough early in his ninja career as the only elemental ninjutsu he could use. His magecraft origin appeared to conflict with his chakra nature, preventing him from performing the other four basic elemental releases; Great Breakthrough therefore filled his lack of long-range firepower. 2

Although Shiro initially presented himself as capable of teaching additional Wind Release techniques, Great Breakthrough was in fact the only Wind Release ninjutsu he could truly perform at the time. He nevertheless had Okita and Saori continue practicing it, emphasizing that proficiency mattered more than immediately learning further techniques. 30

Later, Shiro retained the technique as a reliable foundational Wind Release despite acquiring more advanced options. Its simplicity allowed it to be adapted for suppression, movement, battlefield control, and exceptionally high-output attacks when backed by Blood Maiden or Shiro's greatly increased chakra reserves. 200 355
