Background

Little Crystal was originally an ice phoenix weakened by nirvana and living alone in the Water Elemental Plane. Although it had regressed to beginner-level strength, it retained the intelligence, experience, and underlying realm of an ancient elemental creature. A fragment of the ice block within Karen Sunstrider's sea of consciousness had controlled the phoenix, tying its circumstances to Karen's earlier soul-related incident. 93 94

Karen named it “Little Crystal” after its sparkling appearance and offered an equal contract rather than enslavement. The contract transferred a portion of Karen's exceptional ice talent to Little Crystal, convincing it that he did not intend harm. Karen also promised to provide resources for its recovery, and Little Crystal agreed to remain with him. 94

Karen hunted water elemental creatures and fed their elemental essences to Little Crystal, allowing it to recover quickly without the bottlenecks normally associated with advancement. He established a concealed island lair near a planar passage for it and preserved their ability to summon one another across planes. 95

To overcome the barrier between Intermediate and Advanced rank, Little Crystal required higher-quality ice energy. Duke Hydraxis later gifted Karen a Heart of Ice Marrow, which Little Crystal used during its guarded advancement. 99 102 110

Appearance

Little Crystal is a phoenix formed from ice-elemental crystals. Its body becomes larger, sharper, and more imposing with each recovery-stage advancement.

It is expressive and emotionally direct. It holds a deep resentment toward fire phoenixes, especially Al'ar, reacts affectionately to Karen's care and gifts, and became offended when he went too long without summoning it. 94 107 127

Despite its pride and occasional complaints about the burdens of nirvana, Little Crystal is cooperative in battle and follows Karen's plans through their contract. It also shows concern when Karen is endangered during travel. 99 128
