Background / History
Before Oreki became Sakayanagi Arisu's primary interest, Kiyoko was originally the person Arisu intended to target 2. Kiyoko entered the school after receiving exactly half marks in every entrance-exam subject, an outcome Oreki interprets as a deliberate attempt to attract the attention of capable observers rather than remain unnoticed 8 48.
Kiyoko initially pressures Karuizawa Kei for 50,000 points after the upperclassman incident. She later begins asking Kei about Oreki, prompting him to have Kei recruit her into the Tennis Club so he can assess her directly 5 6.
Appearance
Kiyoko has a frail-looking build that conceals considerable physical power. Oreki and Karuizawa first recognize her by her expressionless demeanor and distinctive “dead fish eyes.” 9 10
- Usually wears a sullen or deeply thoughtful expression. 10 12
- Has an outwardly delicate appearance despite well-developed arm muscles and powerful tennis strokes. 9 35
- Her fixed stare is unsettling enough to make Karuizawa uneasy. 10
Personality
Kiyoko is quiet, difficult to read, and rarely participates in ordinary gossip or social interests. Karuizawa finds it nearly impossible to identify common ground with her, describing her as someone with little presence until an important situation makes her memorable 5 12.
Oreki perceives Kiyoko as a passive counterpart to Sakayanagi: she draws attention to herself, then waits for others to challenge her. Her conduct during the investigations supports her willingness to act independently, conceal information, and force opponents to react to her moves 8 27 38.
She is determined in conflict. When Oreki continues investigating despite her warning, she confronts him directly, leverages evidence against his side, and prepares to fight rather than concede 37.
Abilities & Skills
Observation and Deduction
Kiyoko rapidly connects details that Oreki attempts to probe indirectly.
- Recognizes that Oreki is referring to Student Council secretary Tachibana Akane before he identifies her by name. 12
- Notices the tennis ball lodged on the gymnasium steel frame and understands its connection to the secretary. 10 12
- Investigates the bus incident and the driver's suicide independently. 16
- Discovers Oreki's phone-related deception during their confrontation. 38
Investigation and Counterplay
Kiyoko actively competes with Oreki for information in the bus and art-gallery cases.
- Submits an answer to Sakayanagi's mystery before Oreki does, naming the sponsor's daughter as the suspect. 17
- Warns Oreki by phone to stop investigating the art-gallery case. 27
- Reaches the relevant notebook before Oreki; he finds a recently planted fake and concludes that Kiyoko likely removed the original. 28
- Uses video evidence of Hashimoto training a crow to carry a tennis ball into the gymnasium as leverage against Oreki's side. 37
Tennis and Physical Ability
Kiyoko is an exceptionally capable tennis player whose strength is disguised by her appearance.
- Returns Oreki's aggressive opening shots and maintains an intense rally with him. 10 11
- Reacts quickly enough to return Oreki's high lob after initially freezing at its implication. 10 11
- Loses the recruitment match only when a strong wind dislodges the stuck tennis ball, ending the game in Oreki's favor. 11
- Oreki estimates her physical strength at S based on her arm development and the force of her swings. 35
Relationships
- Oreki Houtarou — Investigative rival. Kiyoko inquires about him through Karuizawa, accepts his Tennis Club trap, and repeatedly counters his attempts to uncover her motives 6 10 12 27 38.
- Karuizawa Kei — Kiyoko demands 50,000 points from Kei, then questions her about Oreki. Kei later serves as Oreki's observer when Kiyoko joins the Tennis Club 5 6 8.
- Sakayanagi Arisu — A rival target of Arisu's interest. Sakayanagi engineers circumstances for Kiyoko and Oreki to meet and turns their investigation into a contest over who can solve the case first 2 10 16.
- Sakura Airi — Kiyoko approaches Airi and warns her to stay away from Oreki; later, the two are seen together during Kiyoko's confrontation with Oreki 16 37.
- Shiina Hiyori — Has a “showdown” with Shiina during the art-gallery investigation, though its details are not disclosed 28.
- Hashimoto Masayoshi — Records evidence of Hashimoto's role in the crow-and-tennis-ball operation and uses it to pressure Oreki's side 37.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Tennis Club Recruitment
Kiyoko agrees unusually readily when Kei asks her to join the Tennis Club. There, Sakayanagi arranges for her to face Oreki in the first recruitment match rather than a later round. The game allows Oreki to confirm that she discovered the gymnasium tennis ball, while Kiyoko demonstrates comparable observational ability and athletic talent 8 10 11.
Bus-Incident Mystery
Kiyoko investigates the same chain of events Oreki follows through Sakura Airi: the Class D bus incident, its driver, and the driver's later suicide. She submits her answer to Sakayanagi first, placing her ahead of Oreki in the race to resolve the case 16 17.
Art-Gallery Investigation
Kiyoko continues pursuing the former curator case through Sakura Airi's connection. She tells Oreki to abandon his investigation, apparently gets to a key notebook before him, and encounters Shiina during the case 27 28.
Confrontation with Oreki
After Oreki persists, Kiyoko meets him near the dormitory with Sakura Airi. She presents video evidence tying Hashimoto to the gymnasium incident and proposes that both sides back down. When Oreki refuses, Kiyoko advances toward him and nearly fights Hashimoto before Ichinose intervenes 37.
Kiyoko later exposes Oreki's attempt to use a newly purchased phone as a decoy, warns him to use an older device next time, and leaves with Airi 38.
Sakayanagi IF Route
In the alternate Sakayanagi route, Kiyoko reveals that she knows Sakayanagi intended to use Oreki as a pawn. She attempts to blackmail Oreki, demanding Karuizawa's expulsion or transfer and five million points; Oreki instead subdues her while seeking Sakayanagi's location 48.
