History

Enrollment and the bus incident

Sakayanagi meets Oreki Houtarou at the bus stop on the first day of school. Katsuragi Kohei immediately identifies her as someone who controls others, while Sakayanagi treats Oreki as a potential companion despite his attempts to avoid her. When their bus runs out of fuel after its gauge is tampered with, she leaves with Oreki and rides with him to school on a bicycle. His deductions and refusal to be easily controlled make him more interesting to her. 1

During the entrance ceremony, Sakayanagi ensures Oreki stands beside her and exchanges messages with him about the school’s point system and the coming power outage. After Oreki identifies the damaged distribution box as the cause, she uses her father’s authority to have the issue resolved quickly. Her attention shifts from Ayanokoji Kiyoko to Oreki, whom she finds increasingly intriguing. 2

Early partnership

Sakayanagi recruits Oreki to investigate the gymnasium blackout. Since her father does not want a student implicated, she proposes that they create a believable false explanation rather than expose the responsible party; the offered reward is five million points. She provides surveillance footage through her father, allowing Oreki to pursue the case. 3

Sakayanagi and Oreki investigate the theft of a famous painting from the school art gallery. She contributes her recognition of people and details, including identifying the sponsor’s daughter’s private driver, while Oreki leads much of the deduction. 15

Rather than treating the mystery solely as a crime to be solved, Sakayanagi turns it into a contest by arranging circumstances that place Oreki and Kiyoko in competition to solve it first. Kamuro openly questions the need for these methods, but Sakayanagi considers the contest more enjoyable than an uneventful school life. 16

Alliance with Oreki

As Class A’s internal divisions and outside threats intensify, Oreki acknowledges Sakayanagi’s strength and chooses to temporarily side with her rather than Ryuen Kakeru. Sakayanagi accepts the alliance while continuing to monitor his independent investigations and relationships. 24 37

Sakayanagi IF Route

In the Sakayanagi IF Route, Sakayanagi’s heart condition becomes critically severe. Her father tells Oreki that she is happy to have met him and should be allowed to spend her remaining time as she wishes. 40

Sakayanagi is subsequently expelled. Oreki becomes emotionally destabilized, attempts to uncover her whereabouts, and is willing to neglect or betray Class A’s interests in order to find her. 42 48
