Background / History
Hiyori comes from the Shiina family, whose business rose alongside changing times. Unlike Sakayanagi Arisu, she was raised under extensive family rules because the older generation feared losing the family’s wealth and status; this upbringing is cited as the reason for her quiet, intelligent disposition. 32
She first approaches Oreki at a restaurant while conveying Ryuen Kakeru’s proposal to collaborate against Sakayanagi. Rather than ending the encounter after delivering the message, she asks Oreki to talk with her. 18
After recognizing that Oreki is investigating the art-gallery theft and its wider circumstances, Hiyori offers to become his assistant. Oreki accepts because he lacks capable manpower, beginning their partnership. 19
Personality
Hiyori is quiet, polite, and intellectually curious. She is an avid reader of mystery novels and considers real cases even more interesting than fiction, though she recognizes that reality does not always follow narrative logic. 19
Despite her reserved manner, she can be unexpectedly proactive. She initiates deductions about the art-gallery case, invites Oreki to lunch, plays a phone-call prank on him, and openly notes that she and Oreki are “the same kind.” 24 25 26
Her interest in people outweighs her interest in books. Although Ayanokoji offers her a first edition of Sherlock Holmes in exchange for dropping her investigation, Hiyori continues pursuing the matter and instead asks Oreki to investigate Ayanokoji with her. 32
