Background / History

Kei is targeted by three upperclassmen near the convenience store after mistakenly taking one of their bear keychains. Though she presents herself as tough, she is overwhelmed, cries, and wishes someone would protect her. Oreki intervenes by recording the confrontation and bluffing the bullies into leaving; he also returns her own bear keychain. Kei thanks him and asks to meet after class because she fears the upperclassmen will continue targeting her 4.

At the Lake Pavilion, Kei reveals that one of the upperclassmen is demanding 50,000 points from her for losing face. She asks Oreki to pretend to be her boyfriend; he instead agrees to protect her from harm if she watches Ayanokoji Kiyoko on his behalf. Kei accepts and asks him to escort her to her dormitory because walking alone makes her feel insecure 5.

She reports that Kiyoko has been punished and that Kiyoko readily agreed to join the Tennis Club. During dinner with Oreki, Kei learns that the school’s initial 100,000-point allocation is not a permanent monthly guarantee, causing her to regret ordering an expensive meal. Oreki pays for it as compensation for her work and promises to consider requests after future successful tasks 8.

Kei continues accompanying Oreki during his investigation of Kiyoko, warning him that students who fail major examinations are expelled. At the Tennis Club, she identifies Kiyoko for him and later waits after his match while he probes Kiyoko further 9 10 11.

She is socially conscious and values her place among the girls in Class D. Her effort to publicize a relationship with Oreki is motivated by the security and prestige it gives her, not merely romance 12.
