Chen Changhong was raised by his grandfather, Chen Guan. As a child, he could see fire essence in the air, which he described as “red flowers”; Chen Guan only understood the phenomenon after awakening spiritual energy himself 42. Changhong was taken from the village while young and entered the Guanglin Sect, where he cultivated for twenty-five years 37.

At the age of thirty-three, while appearing to be around twenty, Changhong returned to his home village after being delayed for years by monsters. He found his grandfather's house occupied by neighbors and learned that Chen Guan was believed to have been murdered. The news shattered his normally sunny disposition, and his uncontrolled aura heated and visibly distorted the surrounding air 37 38.

Suspecting that Chen Guan's apparent reincarnation might be an impostor arranged by Yanhe Pavilion's proprietor, Changhong observed and tested him rather than immediately acknowledging him 41.
