History

Great Qi's Grand Canal project was designed to draw fresh water from the mountains and rivers beyond the Eastern Border through a main formation and subsidiary arrays spread across the dynasty. The canal hub became the center of a heavenly tribulation that threatened a catastrophic flood. 103

During the crisis, the State Preceptor, Great Qi deathsworn, and other cultivators struggled to maintain the formation. Chen Guan sacrificed his life force and soul to stabilize it, allowing the canal to open safely. Great Qi thereafter enfeoffed him as the River God of the Grand Canal and guarded his body. 103

The River God's continued presence became a national concern. Great Qi protected his corpse from outside cultivators, including Xuanyuan Sect disciple Mu Shi, who sought to inspect the River God's true form and later considered seizing the Golden Body. 122

Government and Defenses

• Qi Emperor — Sovereign of Great Qi; works with the State Preceptor and Prime Minister Zuo to prepare for national threats. 122

Noted Defensive Strength

Territory and Development

Great Qi was formerly a ten-thousand-mile territory, but later expanded to a radius of fifteen thousand miles. Settlements that were once borderland communities, including Little Liuzi Town, became closer to the dynasty's central region. 203

Population growth produced more cultivators and geniuses, giving Great Qi the capacity to clear demon-controlled mountains and forests for settlement. The same expansion created land shortages and persistent conflicts with demons and evil cultivators along its borders. 203

The Grand Canal supports Great Qi's growing population and territory, but its connection to the River God's Golden Body also makes the dynasty vulnerable to karmic calamities and covetous outside cultivators. 122 149

The Grand Canal River God

Chen Guan, also known as the South Sea Flood Dragon King, became Great Qi's River God after sacrificing himself to stabilize the Grand Canal's opening. 103

• Great Qi's people came to call him the Great Qi River God, while the tale of his sacrifice spread as the legend of the River God Controlling the Waters. 104
• The court and cultivators guarded his body at the bottom of the river, where nearby cultivation was said to become slightly faster. 104
• Great Qi refused Mu Shi access to the River God's true form, treating the River God as a benefactor to the dynasty's hundreds of millions of people. 122
• The River God Festival gradually became a customary Great Qi holiday rather than solely an act of gratitude. 126

Foreign Relations and Threats

• Zhao Dynasty — Allied with Great Qi and the Heng Dynasty; sent aid when Great Qi faced the threat of Demon Kings entering its territory. 140

Later Protection

Mountain-Roaming Daoist later protected Great Qi for a century and helped resolve a killing tribulation involving Qi Yan and other Great Qi cultivators. This preserved the dynasty's national strength for the following five hundred years. 198 208
