Background / History

Tang San studied under Yu Xiaogang and followed his arrangements closely while part of the Shrek Seven Devils. Tang Yuehua later questioned why Yu Xiaogang controlled Shrek's affairs and why Tang San was so obedient to him; she also believed the toxin-focused development of his Blue Silver Grass was damaging his future 51.

Even before the later establishment of the Tang Sect, Tang San sought funds to build it and pushed Shrek to accept Xuan Qing's one-against-seven soul-fighting challenge because of its one-hundred-thousand Gold Soul Coin reward 19. During that fight, Xuan Qing's dragon might suppressed Tang San's Blue Silver Grass so thoroughly that its vines flattened to the ground before reaching him 20.

When Xuan Qing attacked Yu Xiaogang, Tang San intervened to protect his master. Xuan Qing severely beat him, leaving a scar running from his forehead to his chin despite Ye Lingling's treatment 27 29. The humiliation deepened Tang San's hatred; he dreamed of crushing Xuan Qing with a Clear Sky Hammer carrying only hundred-thousand-year soul rings and declared himself the world's true “Child of Destiny” 29.

Tang Hao later revealed that Tang San knew of his mother's sacrifice for his ninth spirit ring and the true nature of his Blue Silver Grass. Tang Hao fought Ju Gui to give Tang San and the others an opportunity to escape 38. Tang San subsequently reunited with his aunt Tang Yuehua, who sheltered his group outside Heaven Dou City; he and Flender presented Xuan Qing as a malicious attacker while omitting that Tang San had struck first 42.

Possession and Identity

Tang San's body is later possessed by his future self, Sea God Tang San. The possessing soul wipes the original Tang San's memories in haste, leaving the body with no accessible memories beyond the possessor's identity as the Sea God 73.

Sea God Tang San is shocked by the facial scar and by the body's rank-35 cultivation. He recognizes that events have diverged from his memories: he expects to have already obtained the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well's immortal herbs and Dugu Bo's pill bead, but instead finds himself using Yu Xiaogang's medicinal bath formula 73.

Xuan Qing later tells Tang Yuehua that Tang San's body had first been occupied by an “old ghost” from birth and then possessed again by his future self. He characterizes the original Tang San as having died at birth, leaving the body to be used by three distinct souls across its life. Xiao Wu, who had spent six years around Tang San, reacts with horror and physical illness upon hearing this 164.

Tang San's early actions show loyalty to Yu Xiaogang: he intervenes when Xuan Qing attacks his master and accepts Yu Xiaogang's direction over Shrek's affairs 27 51. Following his disfigurement, however, humiliation turns into obsession. His dreams and later plans are dominated by vengeance against Xuan Qing and the recovery of overwhelming power 29 74.

After Sea God Tang San takes control, he becomes increasingly possessive toward Xiao Wu and openly ruthless toward perceived obstacles. He attacks Tailong for harassing her, contemplates killing Dugu Bo for the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, and seeks godhood so that he can “control everything” 73 74. His ambition extends beyond reclaiming the Sea God and Asura positions: he covets the Creation Power of the God of Destruction and Goddess of Life to become sole king of the God Realm 74.

Tang San treats power as his foremost priority. He privately regards the Shrek members whose potential was damaged by Yu Xiaogang's formula as future dependents whom he could restore with divine power, and he later considers the Tang Sect merely a tool for consolidating his strength 83 187. His concern for Xiao Wu remains genuine but possessive, leading him to prioritize preserving even a remote chance of reconciliation with her over Tang Chen's safety during Gu Yuena's confrontation with the Tang Sect 188.

He is also manipulative when pursuing his goals. He convinces Tang Chen to aid his attempt to obtain the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud by invoking the possibility of freeing Bo Saixi from her role as High Priestess, though he privately has no intention of helping her once his own Sea God inheritance is secured 192.
