Background
Yang Guyun was born into the Breaking Clan, one of the Four Great Clans and a lineage famed for the Soul Breaking Spear's destructive power. His grandfather is the clan patriarch Yang Wudi, while his father is Yang Pojun. 45
The Breaking Clan's inherited Soul Breaking Spear is renowned for absolute offense and carries an innate additional spirit ring, though this trait also makes reaching the Title Douluo realm more difficult. Yang's Returnless Spear is a mutation of that martial soul. 45
He rejected the clan's emphasis on alchemy, poisoncraft, and dependence on stronger powers. Believing he lacked both talent and interest in alchemy, he chose the Spear Dao instead and left the clan to forge his own path. He adopted the name “Guyun” and named his spear No Return. 45 145
While traveling toward Tiandou City, Yang saved an elderly couple from bandits and met Zhou Qiubai shortly afterward. Though wary of the stranger at first, he accepted Zhou's offer to travel together after recognizing his sword intent and character. 44
Although Yang initially considered himself separate from the Breaking Clan, he gradually reconciled with Yang Wudi. After becoming Canghai City's Second City Lord, he was reunited with his grandfather when the Breaking Clan relocated to Canghai City. 153 411 447
Appearance
Yang Guyun is a young man who usually wears black and carries the nine-foot Returnless Spear.
- Cold, deep-pool-like eyes that show wariness rather than malice. 44
- Typically dresses in black attire. 72
- Wields a pitch-black spear marked by dark-red, blood-like patterns. 44
- The Returnless Spear bears a dark-red tassel. 72
- After being tempered by Dragon Blood Tempering Grass, the spear's blood patterns deepen and fine textures emerge across its shaft. 153
- When he unleashes his power at Canghai City's battlefront, black soul power spills from the Returnless Spear in thin strands around him. 437
Personality
Yang is taciturn, guarded, and exceptionally steadfast. He speaks plainly, keeps his composure under pressure, and rarely displays emotion, though Zhou Qiubai can occasionally draw teasing remarks or a faint smile from him. 44 65 160
His defining trait is persistence. Yang refuses to pursue a life chosen by his clan, devoting himself entirely to the Spear Dao despite criticism and family tension. Once he commits to a course of action, he is difficult to dissuade; Yang Wudi describes him as a stubborn mule. 145 149
He is pragmatic in matters of trust and resources. When Zhou entrusts him with a Spirit Bone, Yang insists that they openly inventory their belongings so that there will be no confusion between them. 47
Yang respects elders despite his otherwise unyielding disposition. White Crane's teasing over his status as Canghai City's Second City Lord leaves him visibly awkward, while Yang Wudi's scolding still prompts him to lower his head and listen in silence. 410 411
He remains committed to self-reliance even when offered extraordinary opportunities. Yang refuses Swordback Dragon's offer to inherit its cultivation, insisting on winning his seventh soul ring through his own strength. 465
Abilities & Skills
Returnless Spear
Yang's martial soul is the Returnless Spear, a mutation of the Breaking Clan's Soul Breaking Spear. Rather than pursuing pure destructive force, it follows a path of extreme penetration. 86 106
- Capable of piercing defensive soul skills and armor with focused thrusts. 58 158
- Its attacks are concise, fast, accurate, and directed toward vital points. 66 83
- Yang can use the spear shaft defensively to disarm foes, block poison powder, and control an opponent's approach angles. 135 355
- The mutated spear rejects elemental attributes when absorbing soul rings, retaining a soul beast's inherent characteristics without inheriting its elemental nature. 53
- The spear's power and intent intensify after Dragon Blood Tempering Grass tempers his Spear Dao soul. 153
- Yang can activate a Blood Dragon Transformation state, feeding soul power and blood into the Returnless Spear to awaken its blood patterns and drastically amplify its force. 309
Returnless Spear Technique
Yang created his own spear technique rather than following the Breaking Clan's inherited path. Its core is advancing without retreat: once the spear is thrust, life and death are left behind. 45 110
- First Form: Go Without Return — A direct, impossibly resolute thrust that abandons every route of retreat in pursuit of a single decisive hit. 45
- Second Form: Abandon Self — A more extreme charge in which Yang gives up his defenses entirely; if the spear falls, he falls with it. 45
- Third Form: No Return — Initially only a prototype. It begins to take shape after Yang overcomes his self-doubt during Shi Nian's illusion. 46 201
- Abandon Self initially leaves Yang vulnerable after thrusting, since retracting the spear is difficult; he later grasps its true meaning by overcoming his self-doubt. 53 197
- Yang can merge the three forms into a single continuous offensive line, layering their momentum and intent for a decisive all-out attack. 309
Spear Intent and Combat Intuition
Yang's Spear Intent exerts an oppressive forward momentum that can break an opponent's will to retreat before he even attacks. 257 272
- Fights effectively without relying on sight, using perception and intuition against evasive opponents. 44 272
- Defeated four consecutive Soul Ancestors without releasing soul rings or using soul skills. 273 274
- Can identify an opponent's real body among afterimages and exploit precise openings with a single thrust. 66
- His intent combines resolution, sharpness, ruthlessness, and the killing focus of a hunter facing prey. 160
- Can manifest his Spear Intent as a coiling black dragon, using its overwhelming presence to pressure and attack opponents. 288
- His experience in Canghai City improves his control over space, attack angles, movement rhythm, and the spear's length advantage, particularly against agile opponents and battle formations. 355 365
Soul Skills
- Pierce — A thrust that penetrates defenses; it pierced an ice shield as though it were paper and is used against heavily armored foes. 58 158
- Swift — Enhances Yang's movement in conjunction with Pierce. 158
- Quake — Causes the Returnless Spear to vibrate at extreme frequency, knocking approaching attacks off course and disrupting their trajectories. 376
- Penetrate — Used alongside Yang's other spear skills during his combined assault against Tang Hao. 309
- Slaughter — Fifth soul skill acquired from the Earth-Splitting Dragon Rhino. It places Yang in a Slaughter Focus state, allowing him to sense killing intent and inflict increased damage against injured targets. 159
- Jinghong — A high-consumption concentrated strike that compresses Yang's physical power and soul power into a single point; its force rises with the amount of soul power invested. 331
Equipment / Items
- Returnless Spear — Yang's mutated martial soul and primary weapon; a black, nine-foot spear with blood-red markings. 44 364
- Storage Soul Tool — Carries travel necessities and can safeguard shared property. 47
- Medicine pouch — Contains antidote pills, which he shares with Zhou Qiubai. 47
- Spare short blade — Carried among his travel supplies. 47
- Map and high-quality ores — Among the supplies he reveals to Zhou Qiubai. 47
Relationships
- Zhou Qiubai — Traveling companion, trusted friend, and sword-spear partner. Their coordination is so instinctive that they often act on a glance or a single word; together they are known as Spear and Sword Peerless. They later become Canghai City's Grand and Second City Lords, respectively. 44 49 67 76 410
- Yang Wudi — Grandfather and patriarch of the Breaking Clan. Their relationship is strained by Yang's rejection of alchemy, but Yang Wudi follows his progress, provides him Dragon Blood Tempering Grass, and openly worries for his safety. They reunite after the Breaking Clan comes to Canghai City. 45 148 153 158 447
- Yang Pojun — Father. 45
- Dugu Bo — An elder who recognizes Yang's similarity to Yang Wudi and respects his commitment to his own combat path. Over time, Dugu Bo comes to treat Yang as a younger relative and supports his cultivation. 145 159 226 470
- Yu Tianheng — Rival from the Imperial Fighting Team. Yang suppresses him during their arena battle and later spars with his team to offer practical combat experience. 73 105 106
- Tai Tan — Strength Clan patriarch and old acquaintance of Yang Wudi; arranges a spar to assess Yang's growth. 108
- Chen Xuan — Fellow Golden Generation member. Yang is skeptical of his reserved manner but later agrees with Zhou Qiubai that they should face him together someday. 170 261
- Lu Qinghou and the Twelve Guards of Canghai — Training partners and comrades in Canghai City. Their repeated sparring and formation battles help Yang refine his combat adaptability, and they later fight together in Canghai City's defense. 348 364 438
- White Crane — Speed Clan patriarch and elder of the Four Great Clans. He warmly but relentlessly teases Yang over his position as Canghai City's Second City Lord. 410 411
- Tang Hao — An enemy who recognizes Yang as a Breaking Clan descendant. Yang confronts him repeatedly alongside Zhou and eventually helps kill him. 223 310 474
