Background / History
Vegeta was born with a combat power of 1,000 and was regarded as the Saiyan race's exceptional prince. King Vegeta sent him to Frieza's side as a hostage while Raditz was assigned to accompany him. 101 102
After Planet Vegeta's destruction, Vegeta doubted Frieza's claim that a meteor caused the disaster. He came to suspect Frieza had exterminated the Saiyans and believed it was his duty, as prince, to lead any surviving members of the race. 101
When Vegeta reached Planet Sadala, he attempted to reclaim authority over the survivors. Bardock refused to recognize him as their leader, and Chris defeated him decisively. The encounter shattered Vegeta's belief that he stood above low-class Saiyans, but also reignited his determination to surpass them. 102 103 104
Vegeta witnessed Frieza and King Cold's attack on Planet Sadala from among the Saiyans. Learning that a Super Saiyan existed—and seeing Kasso defeat King Cold—gave him a new goal: achieve the legendary transformation and eventually exceed Kasso. 105 109 111
He was placed in Garis Squad with Raditz and initially worked as a receptionist because he lacked the minimum 100,000 combat power required for regular missions. His rapid growth earned Garis' trust, allowing him to accompany Raditz on a mission to destroy the Spirit Tree. 121 122
On that mission, Vegeta confronted Turles, whose Spirit Fruit-enhanced power far exceeded his own. Vegeta protected Raditz and the client planet's inhabitants, used an artificial moon to become a Great Ape, and exploited Turles' rage to break his tail. Turles later gained another Spirit Fruit and defeated Vegeta, but Kasso rescued him with a Senzu Bean. 127 130 132
Appearance
Vegeta is recognized by his distinctive Saiyan hairstyle. His Super Saiyan transformation gives him golden hair and green eyes, while his Great Ape form turns him into a massive simian warrior. 101 183
- Super Saiyan — golden hair, green eyes, and a powerful golden aura. 183
- Great Ape — a giant ape form accessed beneath an artificial full moon. 128 130
- Mystic State — a potential-unlocked state that elevates him into the Divine Realm. 434
Personality
Vegeta is fiercely proud of his Saiyan heritage and reacts strongly to anything that diminishes it. He refuses to regard himself as an Earthling, insisting that he will remain a Saiyan until death. 410
His pride initially makes him arrogant, confrontational, and unwilling to acknowledge stronger warriors. Repeated defeats by Chris, Turles, Kasso, Sun Wukong, and others force him to recognize his limits without ending his ambition to surpass them. 104 133 191
Despite his abrasive manner, Vegeta becomes increasingly protective of those close to him. He shields Raditz from Turles, safeguards civilians during the Spirit Tree mission, and loses control when he believes Launch is being harmed. 127 183
Vegeta can set aside his pride when strength or gratitude demands it. He respectfully asks Korin to teach him ki control, pleads with Kasso to teach him Super Saiyan transformation, and later apologizes to Bulma after Ausbie confronts him. 133 174 196
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta possesses multiple Saiyan transformations and continually pursues higher stages.
- Great Ape — transforms beneath an artificial moon and uses the form's destructive power in battle against Turles. 128 130
- Super Saiyan — awakened through overwhelming anger over Launch's apparent danger. 183
- Super Saiyan 2 — used against Cell and later against Broly. 237 248
- Super Saiyan 3 — eventually achieved through extended training, but discarded because of its excessive stamina consumption. 483
- Mystic State — unlocked through potential development; becomes Vegeta's preferred high-level state after Super Saiyan 3 proves inefficient. 434 483
Ki Manipulation
Vegeta learns to use and sense ki after seeking instruction from Korin, then continues toward the Lookout for deeper training. 174
- Fires concentrated energy blasts, including barrages used to pressure Great Ape Turles. 129
- Flies at high speed and can travel directly to Korin Tower and the Lookout. 174
- Uses Afterimage Fist during his challenge against Kasso. 191
- Learns Instant Transmission, using it to escape Lock's attack during the inter-universal tournament. 335
Combat Strategy
Vegeta is not solely a direct fighter; he adapts his tactics when confronting stronger enemies.
- Provokes Great Ape Turles into firing a powerful blast, then circles behind him to break his tail. 130
- Uses repeated energy attacks and impaired visibility to manipulate Turles' volatile Great Ape instincts. 129 130
- Pushes Cabba and Kale into desperate situations to awaken their dormant Super Saiyan power. 342
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scouter — used to assess enemy combat power, including Turles' 400,000 reading. 127
- Gravity Chamber — used as part of his personal training and ki-control practice. 174
- Communication Bracelet — used to privately communicate with loved ones while on Planet Sadala. 257
Relationships
- Kasso — Saiyan leader and Vegeta's foremost rival. Vegeta repeatedly seeks Kasso's strength, asks him for Super Saiyan instruction, and challenges him despite being defeated in one move. 133 191
- Sun Wukong / Kakarot — rival and occasional teacher. Sun Wukong explains the Super Saiyan transformation and engineers the circumstances that trigger Vegeta's awakening. 174 182 183
- Launch — close companion whose safety matters deeply to Vegeta; his fear for her life triggers his Super Saiyan transformation. 174 183
- Raditz — fellow Saiyan and mission partner in Garis Squad. Vegeta protects him during the conflict with Turles. 121 127
- Bardock — an influential Saiyan elder whose authority Vegeta initially contests after arriving on Planet Sadala. 102 117
- Turles — rogue Saiyan enemy empowered by Spirit Fruits. Their battle exposes Vegeta's tactical ability as well as the limits of his early strength. 127 130 132
- Broly — an overwhelmingly powerful Saiyan whom Vegeta fears, though he still seeks to challenge him. 239 343
- Future Trunks — Vegeta's son from a parallel timeline; that timeline's Vegeta is married to Bulma rather than Launch. 196
Story Role / Major Arcs
Earth Training and Super Saiyan Awakening
Vegeta travels to Earth, initially underestimates Piccolo, and becomes interested in adapting to human life through cooking. After working at a street-food stall, he seeks ki training from Korin and reaches the Lookout, where he reconnects with Sun Wukong. 166 167 174
His obsession with Super Saiyan transformation intensifies after learning that Ausbie—not himself—killed Frieza. Sun Wukong provokes Vegeta by pretending to threaten Launch, driving Vegeta into the rage needed to transform. 182 183
Cell Conflict
Vegeta fights alongside Trunks and Sun Wukong against Perfect Cell. After being severely injured, he joins them in reaching Super Saiyan 2 and defeats Cell, though Cell's remaining aura suggests the threat is not fully resolved. 230 237
Inter-Universal Tournament
Vegeta participates in the conflict involving Universe 6 Saiyans. Outraged that Caulifla, Cabba, and Kale do not know the Super Saiyan legend, he helps teach them about Saiyan transformations and deliberately pressures Cabba and Kale to awaken their latent abilities. 338 339 342
Majin Buu and Divine Growth
After developing his potential, Vegeta enters Mystic State and reaches the Second Layer of the Divine Realm. He challenges Majin Buu too confidently, lands an ineffective strike, and is saved from Buu's counterattack by Kasso. 434
Vegeta continues training through later crises, finally attains Super Saiyan 3, and then abandons it in favor of a more sustainable Mystic State. His Mystic power ultimately rises to the Fifth Layer of the Divine Realm. 483
