Background / History
Dugu Bo was previously hunted by Martial Soul Hall and escaped. Prince Xue Xing once saved his life, prompting Dugu Bo to promise him three requests. Although commonly regarded as Xue Xing’s guest advisor, their connection rested on this debt rather than permanent allegiance; two requests had been used by the time Dugu Bo encountered Lin Xiao 37 47.
Years earlier, he discovered the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well by chance and established a protected herb garden there. The well suppressed the toxins within his body, but he admitted that he could not identify ninety-nine percent of its medicinal herbs. Attempts to collect attractive plants for his granddaughter exposed him to dangerous poisons 36 37 43.
His martial soul’s self-poisoning defect affected his family as well. His son died young from the condition, and Dugu Bo spent his life searching unsuccessfully for a remedy. He feared that his granddaughter, Dugu Yan, would suffer the same fate 42.
Appearance
- Age: Elderly 37.
- Hair: Green 37.
- Eyes: Emerald; his threatening gaze is compared to that of a venomous snake 37.
- Clothing: Emerald robes 37.
- Bearing: Initially appears cold and composed, standing with his hands behind his back 37.
Personality
Dugu Bo values his freedom and initially refuses lasting allegiance to any force. His apparent submission to Lin Xiao is a survival tactic: he plans to take Dugu Yan away and hide once released. He also doubts that any method could truly restrain a Titled Douluo 40.
His confidence in his title and poison expertise makes him underestimate Lin Xiao and Qian Renxue. Once Lin Xiao reveals overwhelming strength, Dugu Bo immediately flees, offering his herb garden as compensation. When escape becomes impossible, he admits his miscalculation but refuses to die without a struggle 37 38 39.
His concern for Dugu Yan ultimately produces a sincere change in allegiance. Lin Xiao’s promise to cure both grandfather and granddaughter moves him to tears and a wholehearted pledge of service, rather than obedience based solely on the Enslavement Brand 42 43.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor
- Manifests as a massive emerald-eyed serpent that Dugu Bo can ride and manipulate for movement 37 38.
- Possesses exceptionally fierce poison, described as top-tier among poison-attribute martial souls 42.
- After treatment, the toxins formerly accumulated in Dugu Bo’s body reside within the martial soul and can be mobilized freely 46.
- Cannot break Lin Xiao’s Dragon Soul: Ten Directions Wandering Dragon barrier; its collision leaves Dugu Bo dazed without damaging the enclosure 38 39.
Poison Mastery
- Releases spreading poisonous mist through his martial soul 38.
- Is identified by the guardian system as capable of slaughtering entire cities; Lin Xiao considers him especially valuable against armies and weaker soul masters 39.
- Uses toxins to render a ten-thousand-year soul beast unconscious for Qian Renxue’s soul-ring absorption 49.
- His expertise does not extend to identifying or safely harvesting all the well’s rare herbs. Some remain dangerous even to him 37 43 44.
- Lin Xiao blocks and disperses his poisonous mist, demonstrating the limits of his threat against a substantially stronger opponent 38.
Psychedelic Poison Array
- Surrounds the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well with a large, man-made defensive formation 35 36.
- Uses faint green mist and hallucinogenic effects to repel intruders 35 36.
- Soul beasts entering the array emerge dazed rather than visibly poisoned 36.
- Its mist inadvertently helps Lin Xiao locate the otherwise well-hidden garden 35.
Soul Power Control and Forest Knowledge
- Can refine spirit herbs into medicinal liquid using precise soul power manipulation 45.
- Knows the Sunset Forest well enough for Lin Xiao to entrust him with finding Qian Renxue’s next soul beast 47.
- Selects a beast with flame and light attributes to suit her martial soul 47 49.
Martial Soul Defect and Cure
Toxic Backlash
- The martial soul’s poison grows stronger as its wielder gains soul power and absorbs more rings, eventually threatening the wielder unless suppressed 42.
- Dugu Bo experiences numb, itchy ribs during cloudy or rainy weather, with hour-long attacks at noon and midnight 42.
- Around the third watch of the night, he suffers needle-like pain in his head and soles, accompanied by approximately half an hour of bodily spasms 42.
- Becoming a Titled Douluo and using the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well provide relief, not a permanent cure 37 42.
Lin Xiao’s Treatment
- Ingredients: Immortal Grade Twin Serpent Heart Grass and twenty ordinary spirit herbs 44 45.
- Method: Refine the ingredients into liquid with soul power, consume them, and circulate soul power to absorb their medicinal effects 44 45.
- Result: Fully repairs the defect, removes the need to suppress internal toxins, heals accumulated injuries, and raises Dugu Bo from level 91 to 92 46.
- Family benefit: Lin Xiao states that the cure also prevents future descendants with the same martial soul from poisoning themselves, without weakening its toxicity 42 43.
- Dugu Yan’s treatment: Dugu Bo receives a second set of ingredients and instructions to take to her; her actual treatment is not shown in the supplied chapters 50.
