Background / History
Life in the Sunset Forest
Dugu Bo raised Dugu Yan in the Sunset Forest and maintained a secluded herb garden around the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well. His sanctuary lay behind a mountain-wide barrier of deep green poisonous miasma; inside, the mountain remained lush, and a dark cave passage led to the well and its abundant immortal herbs 23 24 25.
Despite his reputation as Poison Douluo, he suffered from toxins generated by his own martial soul. Dugu Yan occasionally witnessed his painful episodes on rainy days, but he told her that an old injury was flaring up. Luo Chen later identified these episodes as symptoms of the Dugu lineage’s self-poisoning 23.
Confrontation and Detoxification
Dugu Bo emerged from his sanctuary after sensing Dugu Yan arrive with Luo Chen and Guang Ling Douluo. Suspecting that the strangers were using her to threaten him, he released his martial soul and nine soul rings. He withdrew after recognizing Guang Ling’s superior strength and confirming that his granddaughter was unharmed 24.
After hearing Dugu Yan’s account, he offered access to any of his immortal herbs if the visitors could detoxify them both. Guang Ling’s identification as Martial Soul Hall’s level 96 Fifth Worship made him more cautious, particularly when Guang Ling threatened the Dugu family should Luo Chen be harmed 24.
Dugu Bo nevertheless accepted treatment, reasoning that Martial Soul Hall had the knowledge to solve his family’s condition. He insisted on being treated before Dugu Yan, making himself the first test subject rather than exposing her to an unproven procedure 25.
| Treatment step | Details |
|---|---|
| Method chosen | Selected the more difficult of Luo Chen’s two methods: forcing his toxins into his spirit bone for storage, rather than sacrificing his cultivation 25. |
| Protective medicine | Drank medicinal liquid refined from portions of Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass, Infernal Delicate Apricot, and Aromatic Silk Beauty to protect his meridians and internal organs 26. |
| Procedure | Began gathering his internal toxins toward his dantian under Luo Chen’s guidance 26. |
| Outcome | Successfully underwent detoxification 26. |
Recruitment into Martial Soul Hall
Dugu Bo witnessed Luo Chen’s martial soul evolve into the Death Spider God. Guang Ling immediately regarded him as a dangerous witness and prepared to kill him. With his own life and Dugu Yan’s safety at stake, Dugu Bo accepted Luo Chen’s demand that he join Martial Soul Hall 27.
Luo Chen welcomed him as an elder and promised not to force him to interact or reconcile with people in Martial Soul Hall with whom he had conflicts. Although still reluctant, Dugu Bo became more receptive to Luo Chen after receiving that assurance 27.
His first task was to guide Luo Chen’s fourth soul-ring hunt. After warning him about the soul shock associated with ten-thousand-year rings, Dugu Bo located a twelve-thousand-year Mandala Flower, also called Manjusaka. He had encountered the same rare plant-type beast more than a decade earlier, when it was only at the thousand-year level, and had spared it because he did not need its ring 28.
Appearance
Dugu Bo appears as an elderly man in green robes, surrounded by poisonous gas 24.
- Martial soul manifestation: A giant emerald-green poisonous serpent appears behind him 24.
- Soul-ring display: Nine rings emerge in the order yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, black, black 24.
Personality
Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of Dugu Yan. During his initial confrontation with Guang Ling, he deliberately shields her from his own poisonous pressure. He also volunteers to undergo detoxification first, allowing treatment of her only if his own succeeds 24 25.
He is proud but pragmatic about unequal confrontations. Once he recognizes Guang Ling’s superiority, he avoids escalating the fight and becomes more courteous. His eventual acceptance of Martial Soul Hall membership is driven by survival and concern for his family rather than newfound enthusiasm for the organization 24 27.
He places importance on keeping his word: he honors the herb-access agreement and declares himself a member of Martial Soul Hall once he has accepted recruitment. Privately, however, he resents being treated as though he has no right to know Luo Chen’s identity or position 25 27 28.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor
Dugu Bo’s serpent martial soul combines Titled Douluo pressure with poisonous gas 23 24.
- Its release produces a giant emerald-green serpent and poisonous pressure that spreads through the surroundings 24.
- He can deliberately spare Dugu Yan from the effects of that pressure 24.
- Before treatment, its internally generated toxins were sometimes difficult even for him to suppress 25.
Poison Expertise
Dugu Bo is renowned as Poison Douluo, but his mastery of poison does not initially protect him from his own martial soul’s harmful effects 22 23.
- His sanctuary is protected by poisonous miasma that prevents vegetation from growing where it passes and discourages nearby soul beasts 24.
- Luo Chen considers him especially valuable for group warfare, despite his comparatively poor standing in single combat among Titled Douluos 25.
Herbal and Forest Knowledge
Dugu Bo tends his sanctuary and provides practical guidance for harvesting its immortal herbs 25 26.
- Directs Luo Chen and Guang Ling during their herb collection 26.
- Uses his familiarity with the Sunset Forest to lead Luo Chen’s soul-ring search 27 28.
- Remembers the location and earlier cultivation of a rare Manjusaka 28.
- Understands the soul-shock risk that distinguishes ten-thousand-year rings from thousand-year rings 28.
Equipment / Items
- Spirit bone — Chosen as the storage medium for his internal toxins; its type and location are not specified 25.
- Immortal herb garden — Maintains the plants surrounding the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well and grants Luo Chen access in exchange for detoxification 24 25 26.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and central concern. He raised her in the Sunset Forest, concealed the cause of his painful episodes, and prioritizes her safety during both confrontation and treatment 21 23 24 25.
- Luo Chen — Treats his poisoning, then recruits him through coercion. Dugu Bo subsequently serves as his forest guide while remaining curious about his identity within Martial Soul Hall 25 26 27 28.
- Guang Ling Douluo — A stronger Titled Douluo whose threats compel Dugu Bo’s cooperation. Their relationship remains tense even after recruitment, with Guang Ling warning him against disloyalty 24 27.
- Yue Guan — An existing adversary; much of Dugu Bo’s hostility toward Martial Soul Hall stems from his conflict with Yue Guan 24.
