Background / History

Misaka entered Shen Mo's still-unfinished Treasure Chest Shop after being drawn there by the desires in her heart. Skeptical of its promise to grant wishes, she challenged Shen Mo with a paradox about omnipotence before becoming intrigued by the shop, its Gekota pendant, and Hikari the cat. 492

Her encounter with Misaka 9982 exposed the Level 6 Shift Project and the existence of clones created from her genetic data. Seeing a Sister injured and prepared to return to a lethal experiment left Mikoto unable to remain uninvolved; she resolved to stop Accelerator and save the Sisters. 495 496

Shen Mo revealed that Academy City's esper development had predetermined limits and that Mikoto could not defeat Accelerator through ordinary growth alone. Although she lacked the money for treasure chests, she accepted a 100 million Yen price and pursued the Combat Style Series as her chance to change her fate. 497 498 499
