Background / History

Founding and early divisions

Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha founded Konoha to end the brutality of the Warring States era. Hashirama personally designed its original layout and established the “one village, one nation” system. The Uchiha’s ancestral Naka Shrine was also moved into Konoha 25 322 323 324.

Madara eventually became disillusioned with the village’s treatment of the Uchiha and urged the clan to leave. They refused, choosing to remain in their peaceful home. When Madara departed, he took the remains of his brother Izuna and father Tajima with him 225 226 371.

Third Shinobi World War

At the beginning of Gentō’s story, Konoha is fighting Sunagakure, Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure simultaneously. Its eastern front suffers a rout, Hyuga commander Hideshu is killed and loses his Byakugan to the enemy, and the Uchiha clan head dies fighting Kumogakure 1 2.

Gentō warns High Command that Sunagakure intends to attack the Kikyo Mountain outpost. Hiruzen assigns him and Kurenai an intelligence mission, which confirms an attack planned for two months later. Gentō subsequently leads retaliatory raids into the Land of Wind, looting twelve towns and three cities over five days and forcing Sunagakure toward negotiations 4 5 10 19.

The resulting spoils become a political dispute. Gentō reports five billion ryō in reparations and offers Konoha 2.3 billion from a combined 7.8 billion, retaining 5.5 billion for the Uchiha. Hiruzen accepts the accounting and rejects Danzo’s demand for another billion for Root 23.

Hokage succession and the Nine-Tails’ Rampage

The Fire Daimyō names Minato Namikaze and Gentō as candidates to succeed Hiruzen, excluding Danzo. Minato completes the succession ceremony and becomes Fourth Hokage 29 43.

Anticipating the Nine-Tails’ Rampage, Gentō moves most Uchiha residents to a town outside Konoha. Fugaku’s three hundred police officers and the clan’s Anbu remain inside. The subsequent disaster kills Minato and further weakens a village already depleted by war 43 118.

After the attack, suspicion, surveillance, and suppression of the Uchiha intensify. Gentō later recalls that villagers jeered at Uchiha helping with evacuation and demanded compensation from the clan afterward 225 321.

Police repression and Uchiha independence

Public hostility toward the Uchiha Police Force is visible during the arrest of a special jōnin suspected of killing a woman. The suspect’s mother accuses the officers of framing him, and bystanders join the criticism 38.

By the time the force operates under Danzo, officers extort shopkeepers, accept bribes, and beat civilians who complain. Protests against Danzo are violently dispersed; he personally orders harsher beatings until an Anbu delivers Hiruzen’s order to stop 54 60.

Meanwhile, the Uchiha establish their own Mission Hall and academy. Their growing income, high-rank commissions, and independent training alarm Konoha’s leadership. Hiruzen authorizes Danzo to act against Gentō while warning him not to provoke open rebellion, and later agrees to use Kushina as leverage against him 74 78.

Uchiha departure

The confrontation culminates in Gentō and the Uchiha overpowering Hiruzen’s Anbu with three Susanoo. Gentō nearly kills Hiruzen but stops when other clan leaders intervene. He declares the Uchiha’s departure, accusing Konoha’s leadership of abandoning its founders’ ideals, and insists on taking Kushina and Naruto with him. Kurenai and Shinku also choose to leave 84.

Gentō then uses a Family Relocation Card to transfer the entire Uchiha Compound—including residents, buildings, trees, streets, and foundations—to the Land of Hot Water. Hiruzen finds only freshly exposed earth where the compound stood. The relocated clan establishes Hidden Xuan Village beside Blue Tide Port 89.

Konoha recruits the Chinoike Clan as a replacement. Homura explicitly proposes exploiting their inherited hatred of the Uchiha, and Hiruzen offers them a home in Konoha. Both welcome reports of Kumogakure preparing to attack Hidden Xuan 89 108.

Fourth Shinobi World War and military collapse

After suffering losses against Hidden Xuan, the Raikage redirects two thousand ninja toward the Land of Fire. Konoha’s major clans refuse Hiruzen’s request for troops, citing unpaid compensation, heavy casualties, exclusion from government, and the village’s handling of Kumogakure’s attempted abduction of Hinata 118 119.

Hiruzen assembles a two-thousand-strong force without elite clan support, Hyuga scouts, or Ino–Shika–Chō assistance. It collapses against the Raikage and Killer B. Konoha subsequently mobilizes nearly ten thousand ninja as the Fourth Shinobi World War begins, but over three years its defensive lines retreat and it loses more than half the country’s territory 120 126 166.

Homura’s northern offensive ends in another rout after he places the Chinoike in the vanguard against their leader’s advice. Killer B’s Tailed Beast Bomb devastates them, and Homura abandons the battlefield. Jōnin Yamada organizes the retreat 139 140.

Kumogakure then strikes Hiruzen from behind while he is fighting Iwagakure’s Five-Tails jinchūriki. Jiraiya prevents an immediate killing blow, but Hiruzen later dies. Konoha holds his funeral beside the Memorial Stone 141 144.

Tsunade’s recovery program

Tsunade becomes Fifth Hokage, restores clan cooperation by promising rewards proportional to wartime contributions, and removes Homura and Koharu from office. She seeks Hidden Xuan’s assistance, and Gentō eventually intervenes against Kumogakure, helping resolve the war 144 158 165.

Peace leaves Konoha with nearly forty percent fewer commissions, reduced Daimyō funding, and outstanding salary, reconstruction, and compensation costs. Gentō proposes mixed mission teams consisting of one Uchiha and three Konoha ninja, with seventy percent of earnings going to the Uchiha. The implemented arrangement gives idle Konoha ninja stable income and improves the village’s finances 166 168.

Homura and Koharu are later publicly condemned and executed. An investigation recovers nearly thirty billion ryō in illicit wealth, as well as property and businesses. Tsunade allocates the resources to overdue death benefits, education, and rebuilding, while using vacant administrative posts to secure clan support. Konoha later becomes the Ninja World’s second-wealthiest village 182 306.

Incorporation into Hidden Xuan

Tsunade commits Konoha to supporting Gentō’s unification campaign, asking him to minimize civilian casualties. Later negotiations concern Konoha’s merger with Hidden Xuan; the resurrected Hiruzen describes the arrangement as an annexation softened by diplomatic language 215 317 322.

Gentō requires replacement of Konoha’s flag, renovation to Hidden Xuan standards, and registration of every ninja. Tsunade retains the Hokage position. Hashirama and Madara endorse the change, and the assembled leadership pledges support 321 322 323.

Reconstruction also serves an integration policy: residents and clans are relocated across Hidden Xuan’s territories with housing, land, and other incentives. The Uchiha banner flies over Konoha, and Hidden Xuan celebrates its incorporation 324 335.

Gentō later abolishes the ninja-village and ninja-nation system during world unification. Konoha remains a recognizable settlement, rebuilt with larger walls, cement roads, reorganized training grounds, and an expanded academy 397 424.

Reconstructed village

  • Original planning problem: Fifty training grounds were unevenly distributed, while founding clans occupied prime central land and later arrivals lived farther out 324.
  • Redesign: Koboku Yanō and Hashirama jointly plan the new layout 324.
  • Walls: The original heavy stone wall is retained, with larger outer walls added to the east, west, and north. Watchtowers and Hidden Xuan patrols guard them 424.
  • Roads: Three broad east–west cement roads and four north–south roads connect residential and commercial areas 424.
  • Housing and training: Red-roofed wooden houses occupy expanded districts; training grounds stand at central junctions between building clusters 424.
  • Village symbols: Uchiha gunbai flags appear throughout the streets during reconstruction 371.

Military and Ninjutsu Resources

  • Earlier strength: Hiruzen states that Konoha has nearly ten thousand active ninja, protected by a barrier, Anbu, and the police force 40.
  • Loss of deterrence: The Uchiha’s departure also removes Kushina, leaving Konoha without a jinchūriki during its confrontation with Kumogakure 120.
  • Summoning connections: Tsunade and Jiraiya connect Konoha to Shikkotsu Forest and Mount Myōboku. Hidden Xuan elder Shin Gen cites these ties as reasons not to underestimate the village 305.
  • Ninjutsu legacy: Konoha’s heritage includes Hashirama’s Wood Release, Tobirama’s Water Release and forbidden techniques, Minato’s Flying Thunder God and Rasengan, Sarutobi nature techniques, and clan secret arts 177.
  • Limits on sharing: Tsunade agrees to supply Hidden Xuan with some ordinary techniques but refuses access to forbidden techniques or clan secrets 182.
