Background / History

A human legend recounts that the Sage traveled beyond the sun and moon to Suiming Country and rested beneath the Suimu, a vast Fire Tree. After witnessing an owl peck the tree and ignite flames, he was inspired to teach the people the method of drilling wood to make fire. He was thereafter honored as Suiren 18.

Xuan Qing later reflects on this account because he himself had taught fire-making to the Human Race and had been called “Sui.” He cannot determine whether he replaced Suiren Shi, became part of the legend, or whether anyone who teaches fire-making may be regarded as Suiren 18.

Legacy

• The Sage’s fire-making is remembered as a foundational act of human civilization 18.
• The title Suiren is associated with guiding humanity away from savagery and ignorance through the use of fire 18.
