Kurama Kaiyu was always one of the first students to arrive at the Ninja Academy. As the morning sun cast its light upon his slightly solitary figure, he walked with steady, determined steps into the school filled with both hope and challenges.
At home, Kaiyu's life was far from easy. Although both his parents were present, they did not belong to the main branch of the Kurama Clan, which meant the resources allocated to them were quite limited.
They lived in a relatively remote corner of Konoha, in a house that was not large but was filled with memories of the clan's past. Kaiyu's family had originally been the main branch, but because his grandfather passed away early, the position of clan head was passed to his grandfather's younger brother, which was why they were no longer considered the main branch.
Kaiyu would stare at these scrolls for a long time every day, silently swearing to himself that he would make everyone realize that even if one was not from the main branch, one could still become the strongest in the clan.
In his studies, Kaiyu was extremely diligent. He remained fully focused during every lesson, his eyes fixed tightly on the teacher, fearing he might miss a single point of knowledge.
Whether it was a theory class on ninjutsu or a lecture on ninja history, he took detailed notes. His notebooks were densely packed with the principles of various ninjutsu, techniques for their use, and the deeds of ninjas who had shone throughout the long river of history.
While other students laughed and played during breaks, Kaiyu often sat at his desk, silently reviewing what he had just learned or previewing the knowledge for the next lesson.
Kaiyu possessed a near-obsessive attitude toward the study of genjutsu. He knew that the Kurama Clan was famous for genjutsu that manipulated the five senses. Although the clan genjutsu he was currently learning were nothing special, he believed in the power of genjutsu.
Every day after school, he would go to a forest on the edge of the village to practice alone. He would close his eyes, concentrate, and attempt to mobilize the chakra within his body to perform genjutsu according to the ancient secret techniques of his clan.
At first, he failed every time; the genjutsu would either refuse to manifest or the effect would be pitifully weak. Yet, he did not give up, trying again and again.
Once, he was accidentally spotted by classmates passing by while he was practicing genjutsu. Those students mocked him for being a bookworm who only knew how to bury his head in books and practice, knowing nothing else.
Kaiyu's face flushed red, and he clenched his fists, but he did not retort. He took these taunts as motivation, telling himself in his heart that one day, he would become the strongest existence in his clan.
When interacting with his classmates, Kaiyu was somewhat introverted. He was not very good at taking the initiative to socialize, always quietly doing his own thing.
However, this did not mean he was cold; when his classmates encountered difficulties, he would offer a helping hand without hesitation.
Once, a classmate was injured during training, and Kaiyu immediately took out the medicinal herbs he carried to bandage him.
Although he did not speak much, his focused and earnest expression made the injured classmate feel his sincerity.
In ninjutsu practical classes, Kaiyu always did his best to complete his tasks. He did not possess the explosive power of Naruto, nor was he as cold and gifted as Sasuke, but he moved forward steadily in every training session, relying on his own perseverance and solid foundation.
He knew his path was still long, and that there was a long way to go before he could become strong and make his parents proud, but he was willing to walk forward one step at a time, using his sweat and effort to write a new chapter for the Kurama Clan.
One day, Menma noticed Kaiyu, who was always keeping to himself.
Menma was a warm and cheerful person, but at the same time, he was also an introvert; only an introvert could understand another introvert. He knew that it was very lonely for someone like Kaiyu to work hard all by himself.
Therefore, Menma walked up to Kaiyu and sincerely invited him to play in the open space at the school.
Kaiyu was a bit surprised; he hadn't expected a super genius to actually ask him to play. He instinctively wanted to refuse, as he was used to using his spare time to practice genjutsu or study.
Seeing Kaiyu's hesitation, Menma smiled and said, "Kaiyu, I know you've always wanted to become stronger, and everyone can see your hard work. But do you know? Wanting to become stronger isn't something you can achieve by working hard alone."
Kaiyu looked up, his eyes filled with confusion. Menma continued, "You are always burying your head in practice alone. While this might help you make progress in genjutsu, you are neglecting to make friends with others. Our village is a large collective, and every clan and every person has their own strengths. If you can communicate more with others, you can learn many things you don't know."
Kaiyu was moved by Menma's words. He thought of the bottlenecks he encountered when practicing genjutsu alone; perhaps, as Menma said, communicating with others could help him find a way to break through.
Menma added, "Look at Naruto. Although he can be reckless at times, his enthusiasm and drive can infect many people. Through interacting with everyone, he has also learned many different ninjutsu techniques. And Sasuke, he comes from the Uchiha Clan, and many of his clan's ninjutsu secrets are also better inherited and developed through communication and cooperation with others."
Kaiyu pondered Menma's words and nodded slowly.
Seeing that Kaiyu was wavering, Menma took his hand and said, "Let's go. Today, let's just relax and play with everyone."
Kaiyu followed Menma to the school's open space, where many students were already playing.
At first, Kaiyu felt a bit uncomfortable, not knowing how to integrate into the group. But Menma kept guiding him from the side, introducing him to the other students.
Gradually, Kaiyu discovered that his classmates did not look down on him because he came from a branch family; on the contrary, they were very interested in his genjutsu.
They played ninja games together. During the games, Kaiyu demonstrated some simple genjutsu techniques, which left his classmates amazed. Kaiyu also learned some tips on using ninja tools from his classmates.
During this time, Kaiyu got along very well with the other students, especially Menma, Naruto, and Shikamaru, becoming very close friends.
One day, Kaiyu was carefully searching for something in his family's storage room, which was filled with old clan items. The air in the storage room was somewhat stuffy, and dust danced in the light filtering through the narrow window.
Various boxes, ancient scrolls, and strange clan relics were piled up in a mess all around.
In a corner, an inconspicuous old wooden box was pressed under a pile of clutter. Kaiyu moved the other items aside, gently brushed the thick dust off the wooden box, and upon opening it, discovered an ancient scroll inside. The paper of the scroll was yellowed and fragile, with frayed edges, and it made a faint "rustling" sound when unfolded.
The scroll was covered in strange patterns; some looked like mysterious runes flickering with light, as if they held mysterious power; others resembled obscure map markers, with winding lines pointing to unknown places; and some were similar to clan genjutsu seals, yet carried strange mutations, seemingly hiding deeper clan secrets. Seeing this scroll, Kaiyu's heart began to race, and he immediately associated it with the legend of the mysterious genjutsu treasure.
This legend was like a tempting dream in Kaiyu's heart. He knew that while the entire Konoha was aware of it, no one had ever verified it.
The legend claimed the treasure was left behind by an ancient genjutsu master, and it contained power that could significantly enhance one's genjutsu abilities. Not only would the power of genjutsu become extremely strong, but it could also create unprecedented genjutsu. To Kaiyu, this treasure might be the key to taking his strength to the next level.
Kaiyu understood that there might be huge secrets and dangers hidden behind this treasure map, but he never thought of exploring it alone. The first person he thought of was Menma. After all, they shared a special bond, and Menma was optimistic, positive, and full of adventurous spirit. Furthermore, he was powerful and could always come up with unique ways to deal with difficulties, making him an excellent treasure-hunting partner.
Kaiyu took the treasure map and hurried to the place where Menma often went: the grassy field on the edge of the village.
At that moment, Naruto and Menma were practicing taijutsu on the grass, while Shikamaru lay nearby, his hands behind his head, a blade of grass in his mouth, seemingly relaxing in the sun but actually deep in thought.
Seeing Kaiyu running over in a rush, Menma stopped sparring, and Naruto looked over with curiosity.
"Kaiyu, why are you in such a hurry?" Menma asked.
Kaiyu didn't answer, unfolding the treasure map directly in front of them.
"Look, I found this at home. I think it might be the key to finding that mysterious genjutsu treasure."
The eyes of Menma, Naruto, and Shikamaru widened. Naruto jumped up excitedly, "Wow, treasure! That must be super exciting!"
Shikamaru sat up, frowning as he looked closely at the treasure map, "This thing looks complicated. It doesn't look like finding the treasure will be easy."
Menma was full of excitement, "Regardless, this must be very exciting. Most importantly, no one has ever verified it yet. We have to go and see."
Kaiyu nodded and said earnestly, "This treasure definitely won't be easy to find, and the road ahead will be fraught with danger. We need to prepare well, and it will be safer if we find more partners."
Menma responded immediately, "Then let's go find Hinata. Her sensory abilities might be a huge help, and we can also look for Kiba—that guy can definitely help out too!"
Shikamaru suggested they could also find Choji, and no one raised any objections.
Thus, the group headed toward Hinata's home. Hinata was in her courtyard practicing the Gentle Fist; her movements were like a dancing butterfly, light yet full of power. Seeing them arrive, Hinata stopped and looked at them with confusion.
Kuaiyu explained the situation. Hinata hesitated, knowing it was full of danger, but seeing everyone's expectant gazes and thinking of her own desire to become stronger—and then seeing Naruto—she finally nodded.
After the group found Kiba and Choji, the temporary treasure-hunting squad was perfectly assembled.
They sat in a circle, and Naruto pointed to a mark on the treasure map, saying, "This looks like that mountain outside the village."
Menma countered, "I think it looks more like that abandoned cave." Everyone chimed in with their own opinions.
However, they didn't notice that in a hidden corner of the village, a mysterious figure in a black cloak was watching them coldly.
"These brats want to find treasure? Interesting. Then let them have a taste of hardship." A crisis was quietly closing in.
