Background / History

Obito enrolled in the Ninja Academy alongside Rin Nohara and Kakashi Hatake. He was infatuated with Rin, easily provoked by Kakashi, and deeply insecure when Kakashi and Shisui received admiration as child geniuses. To win Rin’s recognition, he publicly declared that he would become Hokage and protect everyone. 3 4

Despite his confidence, Obito performed poorly in the Academy’s shuriken assessment and was mocked as the class’s dead last. Rin continued encouraging him, while Kakashi regularly antagonized him. 11

During Team 7’s mission to destroy Kannabi Bridge, Obito rejected Kakashi’s view that the mission mattered more than rescuing Rin. He insisted on saving her, awakened his Sharingan while protecting his teammates, and reconciled with Kakashi during the rescue. 32

Obito was crushed beneath a boulder during the cave collapse. Believing himself unable to survive, he acknowledged Kakashi as the better jonin and gave him his Sharingan so Kakashi could protect Rin. Rin’s subsequent death triggered Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan awakening and broke his faith in reality. 33

Personality

As a child, Obito was impulsive, competitive, and desperate to impress Rin. His poor performance and Kakashi’s provocations regularly made him lose his temper, but he also possessed a strong instinct to protect his comrades. 3 4 11 32

After Rin’s death, his grief hardened into nihilism. He came to regard the shinobi world as fundamentally painful and sought to replace it with the Infinite Tsukuyomi’s illusionary peace. He was calculating enough to recruit allies, conceal his identity, and manipulate Akatsuki’s structure, but he also distrusted Shisui and ordered Zetsu to watch him. 43 46 78

In his final moments, Obito recognized that the Infinite Tsukuyomi had been a conspiracy. He asked Shisui to spare Kakashi and expressed hope that Kakashi would witness a genuine peaceful world. 100

Death
