Background / History

Itachi exterminated the Uchiha clan on the Night of the Uchiha Massacre, believing the act necessary to protect Konoha and his younger brother, Sasuke. During the massacre, he fatally wounded Liuli's original body with a kunai strike through the waist/kidney. 1 2 6 41

Soon afterward, Itachi joined the Akatsuki. He presented himself as cold and goal-driven to Pain, describing his slain relatives as obstacles to his goals, though his hesitation suggested unresolved emotion. Pain accepted him for the resolve and strength he demonstrated. 6

When Liuli attacked Amegakure with an advanced Susanoo, Itachi recognized the technique but admitted that the unknown Uchiha's power surpassed his own. He later confronted Liuli in a forest with the Great Fireball Technique, only to be overwhelmed by Liuli's Six Paths Illusion. 8 11

Liuli used the illusion to show Itachi a world where the Uchiha lived peacefully, along with visions of Sasuke's possible future. The experience forced Itachi to reconsider the massacre, his responsibility toward Sasuke, and whether his choices had truly been right. 12 13 Although the illusion was lifted, Itachi remained psychologically unsettled afterward. 17

Later, Itachi defeated Orochimaru through genjutsu, prompting Orochimaru to defect from Akatsuki. Liuli subsequently altered some of Itachi's personality traits through genjutsu, leaving him more introverted, cautious, and focused on Sasuke's future. 40

Appearance

Itachi is depicted in black robes and commonly fights with his Sharingan or Mangekyo Sharingan active. 8 11

He places value on judgment and control rather than raw strength alone. In the visions shown by Liuli, he advises Sasuke that power requires emotional control and an understanding of a ninja's purpose. 13

Within Akatsuki, he remains observant and decisive: he evaluates Hidan's condition, confirms that Hidan is not under genjutsu, and chooses to recruit him for the organization. 46 47
