Background

The Phoenix Cry Bird was originally Huang Shaohai's spirit pet. After Lin Chang'an killed Huang, he used the Phantom Mask and Beast Taming Plaque to transfer the existing spirit contract to himself. The bird immediately recognized its changed circumstances and began currying favor with its new master. 140

It was found in the Cloud Mist Mountain Range, though it does not know its own exact origin. It recalls a flash of fire at its birth before somehow passing through a crack and arriving in the mountain range, where it fed on insects until human cultivators captured it. Later information identifies the Earth Core Fire Prison as the type of place capable of producing such a fire spirit. 432 438

Ancient records identify it as a Bird of Ultimate Yang with a rare wisp of Golden Light Divine Flame. This marks it as a potential Golden Flame Divine Bird or Golden Flame Divine Phoenix, whose successive evolutions require perilous rebirths through fire. 212

After reaching Spirit Transformation, Jin Feng recovered a nest and eggshell containing her origin power from the Fire Spirit region associated with the Fusang Divine Tree, further strengthening her foundation and confirming her deep affinity with ancient fire-attribute treasures. 690

Appearance

Initially a palm-sized golden bird, the Phoenix Cry Bird grows into a large, radiant avian Great Demon before gaining a humanoid form.

  • Golden feathers and a sharp, golden-light-wreathed beak. 140 162
  • At Third Tier, its wingspan reaches roughly three zhang; it can also shrink back to its former small size. 222
  • At Third-Rank Late Stage, it can expand to thirty zhang, with pale golden eyes containing wisps of golden flame. 388
  • While hunting Fire Spirit Flood Dragons in the Fire Desolation Land, its flaming avian form reaches a wingspan of roughly fifty zhang. 399
  • Its humanoid form is an eight- or nine-year-old girl with no lasting visible beastly traits; immediately after transforming, faint golden flame-feathers can appear at her temples, and she occasionally retains the habit of flapping her arms like wings. 439 440

Personality

The Phoenix Cry Bird is exceptionally intelligent, able to understand human speech long before it can speak. It is shamelessly adaptable: after becoming Lin Chang'an's spirit pet, it immediately responds to displeasure by fawning, rubbing against him, massaging his shoulders, and fanning him with its wings. 140 162

It is greedy, calculating, and highly protective of its hoard. It secretly collects spirit stones, storage bags, Golden Cores, and battle spoils, then attempts to conceal them from Lin Chang'an. Its fear of dangerous breakthroughs coexists with a strong desire for greater power and resources. 287 381 415 439

Its greed remains pronounced after attaining humanoid and Spirit Transformation forms. Jin Feng is especially drawn to fire-attribute spirit lands and treasures, readily plotting to plunder the Ye Family's fire-spirit land once her cultivation permits it. 683 685

Despite its opportunism, it is loyal to Lin Chang'an after he repeatedly supports its evolutions. It also gradually develops camaraderie with the Green-Horned Ox and assists the Sword Servant against Yin spirits. 222 253 314
