Background
Frieza ruled the Frieza Force as the feared “Universe Emperor.” Planet Frieza No. 79 served as a supply outpost for his soldiers and one of his “back gardens.” His command structure was built on expendable subordinates, absolute power, and competition for advancement. 1 4
He destroyed Planet Vegeta and nearly exterminated the Saiyan race, later maintaining the false claim that the planet had been destroyed by a meteor. The truth was kept secret so Vegeta could remain under Frieza’s control as a plaything. Frieza’s fear of the Super Saiyan legend was a major motive behind the purge. 19 40
On Planet Namek, Frieza sought the Dragon Balls for wishes such as immortality and greater power. He dismissed the Namekians as weak, deployed his forces to locate villages through Scouters, and massacred villages even after obtaining Dragon Balls from compliant elders. 6 15
Appearance
Frieza initially appears in a hover pod, wearing battle armor and presenting himself as a small but regal ruler. His appearance changes drastically with each transformation.
- Uses a hover pod in his first form. 31 33
- His second form stands nearly 2.5 meters tall and is protected by a natural biological exoskeleton. 35
- His third form is described as grotesque, with a particularly distorted head shape. 37
- His final transformation shrinks and completely remakes his body rather than enlarging it. 39
Personality
Frieza is arrogant, theatrical, and convinced that his status as Universe Emperor places him beyond challenge. He offers Vegeta renewed service beneath him even after Vegeta openly defies him, framing subservience as an honor. 31 35
He views weaker people as disposable tools or amusements. Cui’s death does not concern him, and he treats Vegeta’s rebellion as the betrayal of a pet rather than the uprising of an equal. 6 32
His composure collapses when faced with a threat he cannot dominate. During the battle on Namek, fear, rage, and desperation repeatedly drive him to transform further and finally unleash power he cannot properly control. In his final moments, he recognizes that his own arrogance cost him the chance to eliminate Vegeta earlier. 36 39 41 43
Abilities & Skills
Transformations
Frieza uses multiple transformations to restrain and progressively release his immense natural power.
- His forms rise from 530,000 combat power in his first form to a controlled 100 million in his final form. 32 41
- He created several forms because his full power was difficult to control. 37
- Pushing beyond his controllable limit to 120 million damages his body and compromises control. 41
Energy Attacks
Frieza employs concentrated beams and large-scale barrages of ki.
- Death Beam — Fires a purplish-red beam from his hand; it strikes Vegeta’s forehead without causing injury. 32
- Energy bombardment — Can sustain volleys of blasts for minutes, destroying islands and devastating wide areas. 35 42
- His full-power barrage is stated to possess enough destructive force to shatter a planet. 42
Physical Combat and Speed
Despite relying heavily on raw power, Frieza is an aggressive close-range fighter capable of high-speed movement.
- Uses punches, kicks, rushes, and sudden high-speed repositioning in combat. 33 41
- In his second and third forms, his greater physical power improves his ability to withstand Vegeta’s strikes. 35 37
- Vegeta consistently outpaces and outmaneuvers him throughout their battle. 33 41
Equipment
- Hover pod — Used in his first form; Frieza retreats in it before abandoning it to fight Vegeta directly. 31 33
- Battle armor — Worn over his natural exoskeleton; shattered when he transforms into his second form. 35
Relationships
- Vegeta — Former subordinate and eventual killer. Frieza spared him after the destruction of Planet Vegeta, but Vegeta revolted, defeated him on Namek, and killed him with a Galick Gun. 19 31 43
- Dodoria — Trusted subordinate who requested permission to kill Vegeta after learning of Cui’s death. 6
- Zarbon — Trusted subordinate and adviser who reported Vegeta’s actions on Planet Frieza No. 79. 6
- Ginyu Force — Elite force available to Frieza for problems beyond Dodoria and Zarbon. 6
- King Cold — Father; Frieza had previously shown his second transformation to him. 37
- Cooler — Older brother and fellow claimant to the title of Universe Emperor. 37 46
- Saiyan race — Frieza ordered their near-extermination out of fear of the legendary golden-haired Super Saiyan. 19 40
Major Arcs
Namek Dragon Ball Hunt
Frieza arrives on Namek to gather the Dragon Balls, considers the local population insignificant, and prioritizes the wish-granting artifacts over reports of Vegeta’s rebellion. His forces use Scouters to find Namekians, while his campaign leaves villages massacred. 6 15 17
Battle with Vegeta
Frieza confronts Vegeta near his spaceship, declares his first-form power of 530,000, and fails to intimidate him. As Vegeta overwhelms each stage, Frieza cycles through his second, third, and final forms in an attempt to regain control of the fight. 31 32 35 37 39
In his final form, Frieza initially matches Vegeta more closely by using 100 million combat power. However, Vegeta’s Super Saiyan transformation surpasses him, forcing Frieza to break his final internal barrier and release unstable power. 40 41
Death
Frieza attempts a planet-destroying barrage, but cannot injure Vegeta. Vegeta finishes the battle with a Galick Gun, driving Frieza and a Planet Destroyer Bomb into a distant scorching star. Frieza’s energy vanishes completely, confirming his death. 42 43
