Background / History

Bai Suzhen originated beneath Mount Qingcheng. Roughly 1,700 years before arriving in Qiantang, she was a newly sentient white snake nearly captured by a snake catcher; a shepherd boy saved her life. She spent the following centuries unsuccessfully searching through his reincarnations to repay that kindness. 91 102

After 1,800 years of cultivation and obtaining six śarīra golden pills worth a century of cultivation each, Bai Suzhen possessed 2,400 years of cultivation—already beyond the usual threshold for a yao immortal—yet remained unable to ascend. Seeking an answer, she climbed Mount Emei's Golden Summit and offered Heaven-Questioning Incense to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Guanyin's guidance directed her toward a heart tribulation and a fated meeting at West Lake during Pure Brightness. 91 101

Following the spiritual flow of the waterways to Qiantang, Bai Suzhen rebuilt the ruins of Prince Qiu Manor into Bai Manor in less than half an incense stick's time. She also subdued Great King Qing, who became her attendant Xiao Qing. 100

At West Lake, Bai Suzhen initially suspected Chen Jin might be the person indicated by Guanyin's message, but could not read his overlapping past lives. She later recognized Xu Xian'er—disguised as a young lord—as the reincarnation of the shepherd boy. Xu's female identity disrupted Bai Suzhen's imagined way of repaying the debt, but did not lessen her determination to help her. 105 106

Bai Suzhen openly revealed her cultivation to Chen Jin during a rainstorm and asked him to aid her ascension. Their conversation was interrupted by the Ghost King Tide, where they fought side by side; afterward, they agreed to begin as friends, and Bai Suzhen taught him Samadhi True Fire. 107 111 113

During Qiantang's plague crisis, Bai Suzhen repeatedly used her spiritual power to suppress demon poison in the sick. After Wang Daoling's altered poison infected her as well, she confronted him alone and defeated him, but Song Jiang killed the toad spirit before Bai Suzhen could secure his antidote. 121 123 124

Bai Suzhen then joined Chen Jin in searching Rare Treasure Mountain for the Purple Essence Dragon King Ginseng. She helped free the captive ginseng spirits, fought the Mount Liang Demon Stars, and transported the rescued ginseng clan to Qiantang, enabling the production of medicine against the plague. 127 131 133

Her past enmity with Fa Hai resurfaced when he used imperial authority and Heaven-Severing Guard Dao Soldiers to accuse Medicine King Valley of creating the plague. Faced with Fa Hai's assault and Chen Jin's peril, Bai Suzhen released a catastrophic flood against their enemies. Emperor Zhao Shun neutralized the flood and identified her as “Gonggong,” an ancient enemy. 136 144 146
