Background / History

Great King Qing occupied the ruins of Prince Qiu Manor with five ghosts, cultivating beneath the water while seeking to break through to a thousand years of cultivation. After hearing that a beautiful female cultivator had rebuilt the manor, he went to confront her; Bai Suzhen subdued him, transformed him into a maidservant, named him Xiao Qing, and brought him and the five ghosts into Bai Manor. 100

As Bai Suzhen searched West Lake for the person tied to her ascension tribulation, Xiao Qing accompanied her as a maid. At Broken Bridge, she immediately recognized Chen Jin as the demon-slaying Daoist she feared, and urgently steered Bai Suzhen away from him. 105 After Bai Suzhen discovered that Xu Xian’er was the reincarnation of her long-sought benefactor, Xiao Qing pushed her sister to pursue Xu Xian’er rather than remain trapped by uncertainty over how to repay the debt. 106

Xiao Qing and Bai Suzhen later revealed their true identities to Chen Jin during a rainstorm aboard a ferry. Xiao Qing initially fabricated a mortal background for Bai Suzhen, presenting herself as her young lady’s maid; Bai Suzhen’s discomfort with beginning a fated bond through deceit led her to confess the truth soon afterward. 107

Appearance

In human form, Xiao Qing is a lively young woman whose dress and manner contrast with Bai Suzhen’s restrained elegance. Her true form is an immense azure python with iron-cold scales and rugged horn-like bulges on its head. 105 108

Her bluntness is paired with deep loyalty. She worries that Bai Suzhen’s inexperience with the mortal world could leave her vulnerable to deception, remains beside her even when she would rather cultivate in peace, and joins dangerous fights to protect Qiantang’s people. 111 108

She also displays a practical, acquisitive streak. Xiao Qing complains that Chen Jin once took her silver despite his wealth, is astonished by the ease with which Medicine King Valley earns money, and protests fiercely when the imperial court requisitions the valley’s medicines and treasures. 112 114 140

She tries to keep Bai Suzhen away from Chen Jin out of fear of his ability to identify demons, then helps pursue Xu Xian’er once her identity as Bai Suzhen’s benefactor is revealed. 100 105 106

Ghost King Tide

Xiao Qing reveals her giant-python form to fight the prematurely arriving Ghost King Tide. She crushes ghost soldiers and devours stronger spirits, but reaches her limit before the enemy’s main force emerges. Despite initially questioning why they should involve themselves, she accepts Bai Suzhen’s argument that Qiantang’s civilians must be protected. 108

She continues the battle alongside Bai Suzhen, Chen Jin, and Wu Song, using her demon arts to help destroy the collapsing ghost tide. 109

Lanruo Temple

Bai Suzhen sends Xiao Qing with Chen Jin to Lanruo Temple because of her demon-sensing ability and mastery of the Five Ghosts Transport Art. There, Tree Demon Granny exposes her identity as Green King; Xiao Qing is unsettled but realizes Chen Jin already knew. 115 117

When the cult’s insect tide attacks Granny’s roots, Xiao Qing summons venomous snakes in an unsuccessful attempt to stop it. Chen Jin ultimately destroys the insects with Samadhi True Fire and calls her out from hiding. 120

Qiantang Ghost Plague

Xiao Qing returns with Chen Jin and Gongsun Sheng to find Qiantang devastated by demon poison and Ghost Plague. Angered that Lin’an’s Buddhist and Daoist forces have isolated themselves behind a protective barrier, she condemns their abandonment of the county’s people. 125 126

During the crisis, she remains involved in Chen Jin and Bai Suzhen’s efforts to save Qiantang, including their search for the Purple Essence Dragon King Ginseng and the later distribution of Peace Preservation Decoction. 127 137
