Background / History
Founding
Chen Jin founded Medicine King Valley after demonstrating the Bountiful Harvest Technique to impoverished villagers. The technique produced towering, mature rice almost instantly, persuading the villagers that Chen Jin was an immortal capable of securing their food supply 86.
Rather than accept their savings and valuables, Chen Jin admitted the villagers into his sect. He intended Medicine King Valley to spread practical knowledge—improving livelihoods while building influence, wealth, merit, and reputation 86.
The sect's original curriculum was explicitly non-orthodox: its members would learn health preservation, medicine, and agriculture rather than supernatural cultivation arts 86.
Expansion into Liu Family Village
Medicine King Valley expanded by recruiting Liu Family Village after its residents suffered collective dreams involving deceased elders who urged them to join the sect 87. Chen Jin exploited the villagers' fear of demonic corruption through a staged exorcism, then used genuine healing rain to relieve chronic ailments and secure their loyalty 88.
He distributed blessed seeds that could absorb earth-vein essence independently. Rice planted from them ripened once a day, while herbs could be harvested every five days; villagers retained their grain harvests, while medicinal herbs became Medicine King Valley's foundation 88 89.
Qiantang Operations
With Old Master Zhang's support, Chen Jin planned Medicine King Valley Selection, a West Lake pavilion where the Valley's highest-grade medicinal herbs would be sold through members-only auctions 90. The model relied on branded packaging, rarity, appraisals, consignment services, and membership restrictions to establish Medicine King Valley as a trusted premium name 90.
Medicine King Valley later established Peace Preservation Hall in Qiantang. The hall provided free diagnosis and medicine to poor residents with village-head guarantees while selling fifty percent of its shares as ten thousand ten-tael portions to fund its charitable operations 114.
During the Ghost Plague, the Valley developed and freely dispensed Peace Preservation Decoction, which cured the demon poison, restored patients' vitality, and enhanced its standing across Qiantang 137 139.
Imperial Pressure and Public Reverence
The imperial court praised Medicine King Valley's plague relief before demanding its Peace Preservation Decoction formula, stockpiled spiritual medicines, rare treasures, and curios as tribute 140. Chen Jin accepted the requisition to preserve the sect's larger foundation; its financial division subsequently promoted the decoction as an imperial tribute product 140 141.
The court later accused Medicine King Valley of manufacturing the plague for profit, ordered its businesses sealed, and attempted to arrest Chen Jin, Bai Suzhen, Wu Song, Gongsun Sheng, and their associates 144.
After Medicine King Bodhisattva manifested through Chen Jin, collective dreams and the Valley's prior plague relief led Qiantang's people to regard Medicine King Valley as a Bodhisattva-backed institution. Offerings surged, its associated industries rose in value by 1300%, and West Lake Gathering memberships became extraordinarily expensive 148.
