Background

Luffy is a young pirate who regards becoming Pirate King not as ruling the sea, but as becoming its freest person. His ambition drives him to gather companions, seek the world’s greatest treasure, and sail without submitting to others’ control 139.

His straw hat was entrusted to him by Shanks. Luffy grew up alongside Ace as his sworn younger brother; his father is Dragon of the Revolutionary Army, while Marine Vice Admiral Garp is his grandfather 176 178.

Personality

Luffy is direct, excitable, and notably food-motivated. He ate more than ten bowls of Ichiraku Ramen during his first meeting with the Ninja World’s advance team, immediately befriending Naruto over their shared enthusiasm for ramen 139.

First Contact and East Blue

Luffy’s crew is the Ninja World vanguard’s first encounter with intelligent life on the One Piece planet. He approaches their outpost in search of food, readily answers Minato’s questions, and declares his dream of becoming Pirate King 138 139.

After Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and later Hinata travel alongside the crew, Luffy supports Nami against Arlong’s control of Cocoyasi Village. Arlong is ultimately defeated, freeing the village 141 143.

At Loguetown, Buggy and Alvida capture Luffy at the execution platform. A lightning strike destroys the platform before his execution, and Dragon’s intervention allows Luffy to escape Smoker and sail for the Grand Line 146 147 149.

Warship Island and the Grand Line

Luffy’s crew rescues Apis at sea, earns her trust through food and kindness, and helps her return to Warship Island. After discovering the elderly Millennium Dragon Yinglong, Luffy promises to help it reach its homeland despite the Marines’ pursuit 152 155.

Alabasta

Luffy agrees to help Vivi save Alabasta from Crocodile and Baroque Works. Crocodile initially overwhelms him with the Sand-Sand Fruit and leaves him to die in quicksand, but Robin secretly saves him 166.

In their rematch, Luffy uses water to negate Crocodile’s sand transformation and manages to injure him. He later collapses from dehydration and exhaustion after seeing Crocodile captured and Vivi safe 167 168.

Sabaody Archipelago

After the Straw Hats’ bounties rise and Luffy awakens Haki, the crew clashes with Marines at Sabaody after striking the Celestial Dragons and freeing slaves. Luffy uses Gear Second against a Pacifista but faces the arrival of Kizaru and multiple powerful enemies 169 170.

Kuma sends Luffy’s crewmates away one by one while Luffy watches helplessly. The separation is arranged to force him to confront his lack of strength and train further 172.

Ace Rescue and Marineford
