Background / History
Cobblepot is the descendant of one of Gotham's original Four Great Families. His father died when he was young, leaving the family in decline and forcing it to survive through underworld work. He was raised by his mentally unstable mother, whom he continued to love and care for despite her episodes of confinement and neglect. 227 228
As a student, Cobblepot was physically frail, short, and afflicted with a limp caused by childhood illness. He was routinely bullied at school, yet endured it quietly while prioritizing his mother's emotional stability. Bai Sui selected him as a representative after recognizing his devotion to his mother, intelligence, and potential to rise from adversity. 226 227
Bai Sui's avatar approached Cobblepot through small miracles, replacing his broken umbrella and restoring his dry clothing. When offered a wish, Cobblepot asked first for his mother to be cured, then for a stronger body and healthy leg. Bai Sui gave him both a cultivation method that drew on the world and a faith-based path; Cobblepot chose faith and entered Bai Sui's divine kingdom through prayer. 226 227
Bai Sui returned most of Cobblepot's contributed faith power to accelerate his growth. Over several months, Cobblepot's limp improved, he grew nearly ten centimeters, and his formerly frail body developed muscle. With divine financial support and piano lessons, he became increasingly self-assured. 227 228
After enduring repeated harassment from his last bully, Cobblepot retaliated by overpowering, binding, and hanging the boy in a school restroom. He removed physical evidence with faith power, and the incident was never traced to him; the bully transferred schools. 228
Witnessing Gotham's violence and an abused girl in the rain hardened Cobblepot's resolve. He concluded that Bai Sui's power was not merely a means to heal his mother, but a tool to change Gotham itself. He opened his soul to Bai Sui and pledged lifelong devotion. 228
Appearance
Cobblepot begins as a small, frail schoolboy with a pronounced limp. Cultivation restores much of his health and changes his physique substantially. 227 230
- Hooked nose; his smile and stare are compared to prey being watched by an eagle. 228
- Previously walked with a leg that turned outward; the condition visibly heals after cultivation. 227 230
- Grows nearly ten centimeters and develops noticeable muscle within months. 227
- Dresses carefully despite limited means; his clothes were washed but bore drink stains after bullying. 226
Personality
Cobblepot is deeply devoted to his mother. Her illness is his first concern when Bai Sui offers him power, and healing her remains the central motive behind his early cultivation and expansion of the faith. 227 229
His early passivity conceals caution, patience, and ruthlessness. He tolerates abuse while weak, but when he chooses to retaliate, he does so methodically—eliminating evidence and ensuring his bully cannot identify him. 228
He seeks power and authority to reform Gotham rather than merely rule others. Gotham's crime, corruption, and repeated tragedies convince him that only strength can make the city less chaotic. 228
As leader of the Order, he is strategic and pragmatic. He limits expansion to Gotham, formalizes ranks to deter internal corruption, fortifies the church before attacks, and recognizes that his own power falls sharply without the church formation and stored faith power. 232 235 248
Abilities & Skills
Faith Cultivation
Cobblepot cultivates through faith in Bai Sui. His mental barrier stores faith power, nourishes his body, and permits the external use of divine abilities. 229
- His body remains in peak condition even after minimal sleep. 229
- Faith cultivation heals his limp, increases his height and strength, and improves his physical resilience. 227 230
- Bai Sui initially returns nearly ninety percent of Cobblepot's personal faith contribution, while allowing him some control over a portion of faith collected in the world. 227
- His available power depends heavily on faith reserves; he avoids using major relics when his personal reserve is insufficient. 235
Faith-Power Projectiles
As a practitioner, Cobblepot can release stored faith power as concentrated energy.
- A day's accumulated power is comparable to a handgun shot, but has a higher hit rate. 229
- Demonstrated the ability by destroying a solid plaster statue with an energy missile. 230
- Uses faith power to conceal traces such as fingerprints, hairs, and skin flakes. 228
Divine Arts
After becoming an acolyte, Cobblepot gains divine arts with both restorative and combat applications. 231
- Calming and healing — Temporarily suppresses his mother's madness, then steadily treats her through repeated use and prayer. 231
- Command — Freezes ordinary opponents in place; as a priest, he can cast most first-rank divine arts instantly. 243
- Defensive spells — Divine spells can block sniper fire. 240
- Purification — Purifies a dark-magic messenger bird. 239
- Transformation Divine Art — Creates badges that allow faith-powered transformation into animals or insects for a limited period. 250 253
Formations and Divine Runes
Cobblepot inscribes divine patterns throughout the church, creating a defensive formation powered by faith. 239
- Detects hostile intent and identifies approaching attackers through the formation. 247
- Creates barriers and terrain changes, including a swamp that traps attackers around the church. 248
- Restrains captured enemies with concentrated faith power. 248
- Plans to extend divine runes across Gotham as citywide protection. 238
- Is substantially weaker outside the church, where he lacks the formation and its accumulated faith power. 248
Leadership and Organization
Cobblepot rapidly turns a student faith group into a major Gotham institution.
- Gains twenty-six casual believers through the Satan Research Society. 230
- Recruits nearly 100 casual believers and 10 shallow believers during the school closure. 231
- Expands the congregation beyond 1,000 members and establishes the Order's first church in central Gotham. 231
- Grows the congregation to nearly 10,000 members within a month of the church's establishment. 232
- Establishes rank-based positions to prevent wealthy supporters from buying authority within the Order. 232
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sacred mirror — A Bai Sui-created artifact whose light can dissolve targets or become a defensive light barrier; Cobblepot uses it to kill an angel. 232 233
- Divine-power bottle / Precious Vase — Holds a drop of divine power and is used to trap and absorb a Hell demon, closing the rift to Hell. 236 237
- Divine-art badges — Inscribed items that let cultivators access divine arts in advance, including transformation templates; activation requires faith power and has a limited duration. 250 253
- Church statues — Store and transfer faith power; the wooden church statue transforms into jade during a public faith-power transfer. 231 232
Relationships
- Bai Sui — Patron deity and guide. Bai Sui chooses Cobblepot as his representative, grants him cultivation methods and artifacts, and supports his growth through faith power. 226 227 232
- Mrs. Cobblepot — Mother. Cobblepot's wish to cure her leads him to Bai Sui; he ultimately restores her ability to live normally. 227 231 232
- Ozzie Calhoun — First monk of the Order and trusted subordinate. Cobblepot guides his cultivation, later promotes him to pastor, and brings him on the demon investigation. 231 236 238
- Bentley — Councilman's son and early believer. Cobblepot warns him about the Court of Owls and discusses the risks of saving Bentley's father. 230 231
- Bruce Wayne — Fellow believer and ally. Cobblepot advises Bruce on Gotham's threats, gives him sacred items, and assists with Alfred's rescue plan. 239 250 253
- Laurie Blake — FBI and Shadow Bureau liaison. She contacts Cobblepot following the angel incident and develops cooperation between the authorities and the Order. 233 234 238
- Detective Gordon — Law-enforcement ally. Gordon acknowledges the Order's usefulness after the demonic incident, while Cobblepot coordinates with him during later crises. 237 253
- Court of Owls — Hostile Gotham power. The Court monitors Cobblepot as a potential threat after attacks linked to its owl emblem and fears provoking him directly. 240 248 249
- Theo Galavan — Political enemy. Galavan considers Cobblepot a major obstacle and plans to exploit his devotion to his mother by taking her hostage. 247
