Unless it used its soul blade as it had against the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, cutting off Orochimaru's hands, there was no need to worry too much about Heyan, who was already dead, suffering utter destruction of body and soul. So long as he did not court death himself, that was basically impossible.

Rings of crimson-black runes spread from Heyan's Impure World body. After coiling around Heyan's soul, they immediately spread onto the Shinigami's hand.
